splitting fuel supply on a 185
Thought I would post this seprate from the up grade thread.
I need to use the tank on the 185 to supply fuel to the vanguard 16 Hp pony motor
Figured on using a tee ahead of the shut off and filter for the C60 and tie in the fuel line for the vanguard.. the vanguard has a fuel pump so I dont want to rob the C60 of fuel.
my guess its 1/4'' NPT going into the tank .
any input,,thoughts will be helpfull.

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
What is the pony motor mounted on? How long do you run the pony motor? Can you mount a gas tank on or near the pony motor?
Small engine shop with junked riding lawn mowers will/should have gas tanks from 1.5 to 7 gallons. Fuel/gas caddy.
Since I don't know how you are planning on using the 185's fuel to start/run the pony motor. Thinking, it may take a bit more time and money to come up with a permanent fix rather than moving the 185 to where ever the pony motor is and hooking up the fuel line from the 185.

Built a trail mower for a guy to pull with an atv. A 5 gal plastic gas can made a good gas tank. Made it easy to fuel up too.

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
I'm using a 7 gallon gas tank from a standard Cub to fuel my 25 HP engine on the generator set. Hood was severely damaged and free. Cut off the hood part. Made a stand to support the gas tank. Easy fill, works great.
Out of pocket, around $20- for shut off valve, fuel filter, fuel line, and welding rod. Metal for stand came from the scrap pile.

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
I have a stanless steel can with the seals that came off a ice cream machine that was scrapped
it has a 1/4'' hose barb on it [just gots remember were it is at] and about a gallon in size
a good quick fix till I get time to hook it to the main gas tank.
The motor is on a stand at the back of the 185 mounted to the final drives,, it tucks in nicely under the back of the cab with the exaust facing away from the cab.
It will take about 6-7' of 1/4'' fuel line to get the fuel back to the motor.

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
If it was me i would leave the glass sediment bowl on the bottom of the tank and come off it then split the line with a T and put an inline shutoff in both lines. Use rubber fuel line for everything. I dumped the hard line on my 184 years ago and used rubber and a shutoff valve. No more reaching over a hot engine to shutoff the fuel and wearing out the packing on the valve.

Here's one way to add a fitting/valve after the sediment bowl.

Make sure your sediment bowl screen is good and clean, that Vanguard when it is working hard will draw more fuel per hour than the cub will. It would require draining the fuel tnak, but you can also get aftermarket sediment bows that have a second fitting you can plumb too. That is what they used on the dual fuel tractors, and possibly on others.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

this is the issue,, if the line to the vanguard is after the sediment bowl will it starve the C60 [rob all the fuel]
can the sediment bowl keep up with the demand.

If the bowll screen is in good shape it should be fine. If you want to make sure it works install a low pressure fuel pump. Google: low pressure 12 volt electric fuel pump: you can get one off ebay for around $10 . Install it after the sediment bowl and if you use a fuel pump you can also install an inline fuel filter too. You never want to install a paper fuel filter on a gravity fuel system unless it is made specifically for a no pressure gravity system. Using a fuel pump will allow you to use a regular mower paper inline filter

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
The cub will use about a gallon per hour at full load, the vanguard about the same. So 2 gallons per hour. The fuel tank, sediment bowl, hoses, can supply that much in a few minutes!
I would just add a tee just below the sediment bowl or use a pony tank on the vanguard. No need for an additional fuel pump.

No, because the Vanguard engine will only consume as much fuel as it needs to run. The Vanguard's fuel pump will only supply the gas needed by the carburetor to keep the engine running.Mike H wrote:If the line to the vanguard is after the sediment bowl will it starve the C60 [rob all the fuel.
The fuel system, 7.5 gallon tank, on a Cub is capable of being drained in just a few minutes. Fuel flow is not going to be a problem.

the answer I was looking for,,,saved me draining the tank in -0 temps

Re: splitting fuel supply on a 185
update;;
split the line after the bowel and it worked out great .
got to do some clean up moving the snow back at the end of the driveway
fuel kept up fine for both engines.
its nice not having to refuel every 15 minutes with the small tank [1 pt.]
thank you for all the info.
