Zenith choke plate valve

Postby cubguy67 » Tue Feb 06, 2018 10:38 am

Good morning to all! I have a Zenith carb 13781 on my 1974 LoBoy 154 that I will be rebuilding soon,my question is the proper location of the poppet valve on the choke plate shaft.Does the spring part of the poppet valve go to the inside when the choke is closed or does it it show to the outside when the choke is fully closed? I've been looking at a lot of Zenith carb rebuild illustrations but none show the position of that poppet valve. On my carb the spring part of the valve is pointing in to the carb when fully closed.Does it really matter which way its on the choke shaft? It appears to me that the spring part should be pointing toward the outside to work properly. Thanks ahead for any replies!!http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/posting.php?mode=post&f=20#

Assuming it should function like on the IH carb, the spring should point out. I don't think the choke butterflies are beveled so you should be able to reverse it without any problem.

The poppet valve protrudes inward when the choke is closed.

Cubguy67, I'm not sure which way it should go. If you go to PDF manuals, then Blue Ribbon, then Zenith, there is a picture that shows the spring inward. The script makes it sound like it should be the other way though.

The air flow has to be able to push it open. Otherwise the device is useless.

The spring goes towards the inside.

Don, there is not enough light inside the throat to see for sure. It looks as if when the choke rod is pulled it will rotate the plate with the spring to the inside, but I cannot tell which side of the plate the poppet is on. If it is on the spring side that is correct, but if it is on the other side it is backwards.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
