The Chemo Treatments Have Begun

At some point you want to say something, but don't want to be premature in saying it. So, here I go...

Today was my first chemo infusion day. Arrived at 8AM and was released at 3PM. It was mostly sitting in a chair, talking with Robyn and bantering with the nurse. The first infusion med went in, then a med to help with another, a second med, and finally, the third one in the form of a pump strapped to my chest that'll administer the drug over the next 48 hours. I'll go back on Friday afternoon to have the pump removed.
At the time of this post, other than mild sweating and a slight wooziness in the head (aka, light headed), I had no signs of side effects today. Side effects may develop later today, tonight or tomorrow, but not today.

I'm reminded of David when he wrote about his trust in God:
"The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom should I fear?
The Lord is the defense of my life;
Whom should I dread?"
(Psalm 27:1)

At the end of our session today, the nurse stated that I had done extremely well, that she believed I was strong and a very positive person. I was quick to correct her, that the Lord is with me and I could not have come this far without Him. He makes me positive; any strength I have comes from Him.

That strength is enhanced by your prayers. It is your supplications on my behalf that I have asked for and have received above and beyond what I deserve. Thank you to each one of you who have lifted Robyn and I up in prayer. It has truly made a difference.

Will keep you posted. Next infusion session will be in a couple weeks.

Having gone through chemo myself, make sure to keep checking your blood cell counts (red & white), and keep ahead of it with whatever the doctors recommend/offer to boost them. I believe I gave myself Neupogen injections, but one time I let the white blood cell count get low because I felt fine & it took a while to restabilize. Basically, don't play hero...use whatever they have to keep stable.

You WILL get through it...your positive outlook will surely help, along with a sense of humor. Wishing you the best outcome!

Thanks, Dale. I’m following doctor’s orders to a “T”. They do a lab before each infusion treatment. Results from that blood work determines whether they proceed with the treatment or not for that day. Gives us a chance to address anything like low white cell counts.

Scheduled to have the med pump removed today. It’s the last thing they put on me on infusion days, followed by two days wearing it, then removed after 48 hours. Other than slight swelling to my feet yesterday, no other side effects and the swelling is gone today.

So far so good. Don’t know if the likelihood of side effects will increase with the number of treatments moving forward. We’ll see. But very thankful at this point!
