John Deere M, anybody have one?

Postby Slim140 » Mon Apr 02, 2018 10:31 am

I have a chance to buy a John Deere M. I don't want it to keep, I want to flip it. I know they aren't that desirable for the lack of 3 point hitch. This one has an original J.D. plow with M hitch, full set of cultivators (front and back), it has a J.D. offset disk made for the M still with the Killefer works plate, rear wheel weights and a modified rear cultivator (not original but had 3 point and has been modified). I can get it for a decent price but getting rid of it may be the trouble. It needs 2 rear rims and I would have to cut the centers out and reweld them on new rims. Not a problem but I don't want to mess with that. I have a friend who wants the equipment but not sure what to ask for all of it. If I sold all the equipment I would sell the tractor cheap, maybe even part it out. Anyone have a J.D. M and can help me value this?

I like the size of the H, M, and 40, which is the line of that size. Of the 3, the 40 is probably the most desirable, it's the latest in that line. I wouldn't mind having any one of them, but it's hard to find a wide front of the H.

Here is a video from Deere's "Out of the Vault" series, and this one features the M.

My dad has a 40 and I had an H I restored with 2 row cultivators. Traded it for a W111 power unit a couple years ago then traded it for a 730 diesel and then sold it. The H was alright for what it was, here's a picture of it. It was to pretty to use. Dad has a 3 point hitch self contained wood splitter that has been hooked to his 40 for probably 15 years. He has cultivators and fertilizer hoppers etc. for it. The only thing with the 40 it's hard to get off and on with the cultivator rods in the way.

I always thought the JD M was a very cool tractor, compact, wide front, whats not to like? I saw one listed as ran when parked a year ago with a woods l306 on it for $999, seemed like a bargain to me :)

better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it...( YES this includes CUBS! )

Wasn't the M and MT the first vertical 2 cylinder other than the A and LA?

I hope to be an H owner soon. They’re kinda like a Cub—small and cute! I’d like to find a cultivator for it and an IH Little Genius or IH Little Wonder one bottom plow to drive the purists nuts!

In eastern NC if I had to guess I would say the JD M was third behind the Super A and the Allis B.

Al, I was at a tractor show when I was in the middle of restoring that H and got to talking to a man and long story short he said he had a full set of cultivators and sold them to me for $100.

Thanks for sharing Ricky. I don’t think M’s are bringing anywhere near that but I’d say the equipment is worth as much as the tractor.
