$100.00 - IH 430 Baler

Postby 2cubs » Sat Mar 23, 2019 10:59 pm

Took a road trip today to pick up this IH 430 parts baler. Couldn't pass it up for $100.00 and he thru in some other knotters, driveshafts, and misc. parts. It just barely fit on our flatbed trailer. Luckily the seller had an AC 175 with a loader and was able to pick it up and drop it on the trailer. Now we have to figure out how we are going to unload it. It has a broken gear and a damaged hay fork, but with all of our spare parts we might be able to get this going again.

Got the hay pickup pulled off this afternoon and took the shear bolt out of the hay packer fork to free it up.

Unloaded the Baler today. Everything went pretty smooth with no problems. We got the hay pickup torn down ready to clean, paint, and reassemble.

Started pulling the 430 baler down to replace the broken and worn gears. We have a 425 baler that will be the parts donor. It is a little different, but has the same gears and they are in good shape. As we tear the 430 down we are finding a few more parts that will need replacing, but we should be able to get a good baler in the end.

I pulled the baler down close to the shop to get access to all of the tools. Used the torch to heat a few stubborn bolts to get the remaining tin work out of the way. We were then able to remove the big broken gear on the hay packer shaft. We were able to save the bearing which is a bonus. I polished the shaft up with some emery paper along with the donor gear and trial fit it on the shaft. The next obstacle will be pulling the side gear off of the crankshaft. They use a tapered key that's driven in tight and then years of rust makes then really tough to get out. Might have to make a custom puller to get a good hold on the gear.

Thanks for the info on the "Gib Key". Now I know what they are called so I can get a new one. The gib end broke off and with not much to weld to I think I will try drilling it.

Same thing happened to me the last time I tried to remove one. I got it apart by drilling it out. I didn't have any immediate luck finding a replacement. Temporarily put it together with a square key, which is still there.

I have welded a nut to the end of the key and used the slide hammer to pull it out

I earned this one. It took 2 days, but I finally got the side gear off. I drilled out the gib key and used a combo of heat, a puller, wedges, and a BFH. Once it was off I could see why it was so tough to pull. Looks like the shaft is galled. The galling looks like its from the gear spinning on the shaft. I may be using the gearbox from the donor baler if the shaft is in better shape. I hope the side gear on the donor baler comes off easier.
