Briggs and Stratton information request

Postby Dennis » Sun Feb 02, 2020 3:25 pm

Does any member have experience with older B&S engines? I've been contacted by an individual in Germany that inherited an old B&S engine and is attempting a rebuild and needs help identifying it.

You can see pictures of it here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/eqWWLJDXWkxSYfFj6

If anyone can help him, let me know and we will figure out how to get you in contact with each other.

Thanks,
Dennis

I didn't see a Briggs ID plate on the side of the engine. Also engine shape is not familiar. How does the owner know it's a Briggs & Stratton engine?

Bore diameter and stroke will help narrow down the engine.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I think it is a model A (1933-1948, 1 - 1 3/4 HP, 2.25" Bore, 2.25" Stroke, L-Head).

I have to agree, or something close to that.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I have seen that type of engine at the Tri State gas engine tractor show that is in August every year.
I does have similarity of the REO engine on mowers years ago.
Good luck.

The photo of the flywheel shows a date code of Aug 1942.

Briggs & Stratton engines can be dated by several methods. These are listed below in order of their accuracy.
If the model and serial no. are known, the manufacturing date listings presented elsewhere on this website will give the month of manufacture.
A date code was used on most die cast flywheels and magneto plates. The last two digits of the year are shown in one cast in depression and a letter representing the month is shown in another. The months are lettered in order, ie. A = January, B = February, etc. Based on comparison with serial numbered engines, these dates are accurate to within several months, assuming that the parts are original to the engine. I have also found that the same type of date code is stamped into the laminations of some earlier magneto armatures.

B & S has a website where he might be able to get a manual if the model can be verified.

How about sending several of the photos to B&S for verification?

From Mario:
I think indy61 is right.

Do you know where I can get any manual or further informations of this type of engine?

I've directed him to ebay (I found a couple, but expensive) and another possibility because of how old it is, the Internet Archive.

Does he know what the engine was used for? Generator, water pump, etc.
I imagine it has quite a history. Built during the war, shipped to Europe and left behind in Germany.
He's probably best off finding an old time small engine mechanic in his area. This link may help.
