Mini Denso alternator replaces Yanmar 1500 OEM Dynamo

Postby staninlowerAL » Tue Jan 19, 2021 6:01 pm

I posted about a mini alternator dimensions on the FCub Forum a few weeks ago: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=109484#p869044 Here's what the damage looked like caused by the catastrophic failure of the YM 1500 dynamo:
YM 1500 rad2.jpg

I got the bracket made for the Mini Denso alt done and mounted, (required a custom bracket cut from 1/2" plate and longer bolts) bolted it on top of the plate that holds the dynamo in place, gutted the dynamo since it was not repairable, repaired the drive assy and left it in place for the fan, changed belt for longer one and re-routed the lower radiator hose. Aftermarket radiator showed up and ready to be installed. Looks like this upgrade is going to be a success. Total cost under $300. :)

Posting my experience for reference. Note, the Mini Denso fitment cleared all the other parts by about 1/8 inch, no other modifications needed. The alt shown is one that I used to get all the parts layed out and positioned. It will be replaced with one that has the output connection on the top.

Update: had to reroute the fanbelt to clear the radiator outlet. Used a 2 in. reverse idler to get it back near to the original position. Getting close to completing this project. Sideshields will fit back in original position, no changes will be visible when completed.

Well, I think it's about time to wrap this one up for anyone that's interested. Sorry for the delay, it's been too cold to work outside in the Deep South. I'm very satisfied with this upgrade even though it took longer than I intended. It's a tight fit, as the pictures show but for me it's a much better solution to the OEM Dynamo and more cost effective to service or replace without having to remove most of the front end parts. Here's the running view from the top:

And the side view with the shield installed:
