Pulley belt question

Evening, gents. I have a Dearborn cordwood saw for my Ford 8N that I restored over the summer, located a PTO pulley, now is the time to get a belt made, so my question is this, for the length of the belt, do I just measure outside of pulley to outside of pulley then double it? Is it that simple or should I take anything else into consideration? I just want to make sure I do it properly. Also would love to hear some recommendations on where a good place to buy a belt might be, I’m thinking one with alligator lacing, but if people here that know better I’d love some advice. Thanks all!

You need to know the center to center distance between the pulleys and the pulley diameters. If the pulleys are the same diameter, the belt length = (2 x Center to Center Distance) + Pulley Circumference. The pulley circumference in this calculation is for one pulley only. If the pulleys have different diameters, just add the circumference for both pulleys and divide by 2. This number is then used for pulley circumference in the above equation.

Probably easier to stretch a rope around the pulleys (where you expect the flat belt to run), then measure the length of the rope.

What is wrong with wrapping a tape measure around the pulleys the same way that the belt goes to get your belt length?

A flat type tape would be best, like a seamstress tape (if the distance is short) or a reel type tape measure (like a 50 or 100 footer)!

Is this saw a mounted saw?

I just run a tape around the whole thing and measure the total length----WAY simpler! lol!

Check your direction of rotation. You are likely to need a half twist in the belt. You may need to allow a little for that.
