Cant make up my mind Now I'm thinking steel tubing for log

I was thinking of maybe doing the log splitter with tube steel as main support what size tube would be good for approx 20 ton splitter
would 5X5 1/8 be strong enough?
Does anyone have access to about a 7ft piece?

I wanted to add I had a few offers for steel I beams
and I still my go that way so again I wanted to say THANKS
I had an offer from someone who was the Job Foreman and had access to pieces left over at the job site but the want add was deleted and I never got back in time

Tony, I wouldn't use that small a tubing. Mine is 6x8 by 1/4" wall and I can flex it alittle from time to time. The biggest thing would be to keep the wedge welded onto the end. The 1/8" material would fail real quick.

On my last splitter I used a 6inch wide flange I beam . When tou got into a gnarly log you could see the Beam Flex. Id say tubing NO. JMHO Frank

Toolman, box tubing with 1/8" wall will never work. If you want it to last use I-beam. I've seen plenty of box tube splitters with welds all over the place from cracks. My old man made a splitter about 35 years ago and we haven't had to fix it once. Of course it's a little overkill. The main beam(I-beam) is about 10x12 with 1/2" flange thickness. The cylinder is about 7" diameter. We run it off of either the tractor hydraulics or the bobcat hydraulics. The end of the splitter has an I-beam upright 10x12 also. I've lifted 4' diameter oak on it with the bobcat, and it never flexed while splitting it. Over the past 20 years or so, I've fixed dozens and dozens of box tube splitters. Trust me, stick with I-beam.

I was planning on using an 24" I beam thats 75lbs per foot in weight. But how do i move it around? I would have to keep it on a cub cadet all the time to move it. I have seen beams flex alot when the smaller beams are used.

Go to Metkit they offer a pipe log splitter its really a basic's setup that you have to finish but the pipes and pusher are there already. And its very cheap too. http://www.metkit.com/ Look in new products....I think its only $265 with shipping with no cylinder. Thats hard to beat if you factor in time, gas travelling to find parts and cutting and welding trying to fab one. This would be really nice on the 3pt hitch too. (int154cub)

I was thinking of using one of these too, I need two splitters anyway so my sons can use them.

If you fab one from pipe after welding it you could fill the pipe with cement to make it more rigid?
