correct rear light bracket parts

Postby inairam » Mon Nov 12, 2018 11:12 am

I am working on my brother in laws 52 cub and found this brack on the rear light ( on the right. The one of the left is what I am used to seeing and shown for comparison)

Was this used by IH some years or did a PO just put it on because it fit?

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

I've seen that type clamp but not on a Cub. You have me curious as to where they were used. Can you read a part number on it?

I looked at it under a 5x glass and found some makings. I buffed it and came up with 6780D and an older IHC logo stamp

Walt's Tractor Parts lists a reproduction of this as a light clamp bracket.

http://www.waltstractors.com/acatalog/Light_Brackets.html

EDIT: Steiner Tractor, Amazon.com, and a bunch of other sources also list the 6780D as a light clamp bracket.

So it is on original IH part but probably off a larger and older tractor.

Guy Fay's book on the hundred series Farmalls specifically calls out that some came with the stamped clamp and some came with the cast one. I agree that the cast one was probably used on the early tractors and was superceded by the stamped one.

No idea. The Cub isn't a hundred series tractor. But I would say it's possible. I have never seen one on a Cub, but I have only had three Cubs and the authenticity of originality of parts on all three was highly debatable.

The very early Cub parts catalogs call out the numbers for both the cast and stamped clamps as "will work for" with no evident preference for one or the other. Since the stamped one was the newer version, it is likely the factory used the stamped one exclusively (unless there was some sort of production disruption). By 1950, the Farmall M Parts Catalog specified to order 350 920 R1 (the stamped one) to replace 6780D. I'm pretty confident that even if a cast one showed up on a '47 tractor, it would not have been on a '52. It is unlikely that the Louisville factory even had a pattern for 6780D.
