Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
Looking for help on this.
I installed led flashers on my 49 Farmall M. I used small led lights from a local supply store. The flasher came from Napa and the parts guy gave me one that he said would work with led lights.
After installation, they work perfectly..... unless the engine is running! With the engine running they flash rapidly and inconsistently. The power is drawn from the ampmeter in the dash box.
Anybody know how to fix this problem? Thanks

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
Based on the word "inconsistently", my guess is the flasher is some sort of high-tech solid state controller. Noise from the ignition system is probably messing it up. Try sticking the flasher inside a small metal box.

12 volt. The flasher is in a second dash box installed that holds the light switch and flasher.

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
Is it a relay type? (does it click?) or is does it use solid state electronics (no noise)?

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
It's strange that it would change depending on whether or not it is running. If it clicks, it's probably the relay style for which the cycle speed is dependent on the current load. With LED lights, the current will be so low that it will click on and off too fast. I'd recommend trying a solid-state flasher which is not dependent on the load.

Measure the voltage input to the flasher both with the engine off and on.

You need to remove the feed wire from the amp gauge and hook it into something that is not directly inline with the charging circuit

Is there anything that isn't on the charging circuit on an m? That's my general idea, but I don't know how to do it.

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
If your headlights are working properly and if you want the flashing lights to be independent, hook to hot side of light switch. If you need them to work with light switch, hook wire to output side of switch.
I have heard this but have not tested it to be certain, that if you leave at least one incandescent bulb in the circuit along with LED bulbs, the old relay style flasher will work normally. Makes sense but don't know for sure.

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
The power for the incandescent headlight switch is also off the ampmeter. I used that post to power the flashers. Wouldn't tapping power from the got side of the headlight switch be the same thing? As far as I know everything on the dash that is powered will get more voltage when the alternator is spinning.

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
Does the tractor have generator OR has it been converted to alternator? ---- something could be overcharging, or not be regulating properly. led stuff is super picky on the amps. Ignition shouldn't cause a problem.---don't take much to throw it off. That's why I never use led stuff on anything. --- I would try the transistor type relay first and see if it might regulate better. It was my understanding that led requires a steady regulated flow of current to work right. Older equipment may need extra filters/regulators/relays/etc.

Re: Led flashers too fast on Farmall when engine running
Do you have any more guidance on what you mean by filters/regulators...etc? You are most likely correct by the way, judging what I observed today.
The tractor has been converted to an alternator.
Today I went out there with a volt meter. It charges around 15 amps when running at every powered post or wire I checked. Seems pretty high but have never had trouble with it other than these darn LED lights!
I observed some strange things messing with it for a little while:
As before, with the engine running, power coming from the amp meter, and flasher circuit switch on, the flashers stay mostly on and flicker off sometimes. If I hold my ear near the flasher it clicks at regular intervals but the intervals seem longer than they should be.

I noticed this time when the engine is running and the flasher switch is off both the reds and ambers flutter!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLJJ2hefxl8
I disconnected the reds completely from power at one point and they still fluttered when the engine ran!
I moved the power wire from the amp meter to the hot side of the ignition switch. No difference.
Tried an identical flasher from the same store. Actually made it worse. The flashes didn't happen at all when running. Worked fine when engine off.
Put the old flasher back in. Moved the reds to turn on the headlights so different switch powers them. Noticed when the engine is off and the flashers run, when the ambers flash off, the reds will flutter.
