Hello all - I have very sporadically used this forum in the past 20-odd years and it is almost miraculous how many great people are her to give valuable help to somewhat clueless guys like me.
I have a 1965 farm all cub. Today, my throttle lever basically stopped working… It moves but no change in throttle. I traced the long throttle rod to the front of the engine where it couples with a moveable thing that has a short spring attached to it, and it appears that the spring finally broke after 44 years. Can I go to the hardware store and And try to buy a similarly shaped spring, or do I need a specific spring for this, And where would I find this spring?

It's a bit of a pain to change out, but you should be able to do a search and find several posts on it. While you are messing around in there, go ahead and liberally spray some lubricant (PB BLASTER or Kroil, for example) on all the moving parts, including the lever where the spring attaches. Continue from the governor linkages across to the carb control rod.
Have fun!

Re: Looks like my throttle stopped working
Installation will be easier if you trim the ends of the spring just enough to let them slide thru the holes.

Lube the level the spring attached to. It tends to be tight. After you replaced the spring it would be a good idea to check the adjustment of the linkage from the governor to the carburetor and adjust per the manual.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

While you're fiddling with it, you might as well check the oil in the fan housing.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Looks like my throttle stopped working
make sure the lever that the spring hooks to is free, as others mentioned lube it, springs can break as the lever seizes up

Re: Looks like my throttle stopped working
Thanks for all the great tips. That spring is a bitch to get on... tight work.
1) I removed generator for easier access (good time to open up generator and give a cleaning )
2) I cleaned the whole area and PB blasted all the throttle and governor linkages
3) yes, thanks Barnyard, it was a good time to check oil level in fan housing
3) I trimmed the ends of the new spring as per Bob McCarty’s excellent suggestion (and thanks Shane N for link to buy new spring)
4) after 2 hours of trying to put in the bottom of spring on first and failing to then put top part thru hole, I put on TOP OF SPRING FIRST, then it was much easier to push bottom part of spring thru lower hole. Hope this tip helps
