Red Square Nose Info

Hi Guys,

Picked up a '76 red square nose cub this weekend. Didn't think much of it being all red, but can't stand the white/yellow color combo........who would ever paint a tractor white??? For those of you who like that color scheme I mean no offense....to each his own. Now that I got it I'm looking for info on how many were made in red? Did some digging on here and found a post that mentions "Raymond Durban's database", but I don't know what that is or where it's located. There was no link in the post. Is that database available thru this site? Or is there other info out there that I could find that documents the number of red vs white/yellow Cubs made that year?

I did a thorough check of the tractor to make sure it left the factory red and wasn't repainted......and she was made in red. Someone did re-shoot the sheetmetal at some point in red and put the wrong hood decals on, but didn't re-spray the rest of it. I also have to say this is my first 12V Cub and wow........does that starter crank! Now I know why everyone switches from 6V to 12V.

As far as we're aware, there was no tracking of the paint colors or quantities. Some have said that the red tractors went to AG dealers, and the yellow/white went to Cub Cadet dealers, but that's also not 100% true even if it was a guideline from IH. Also, there were special order tractors that were painted specific colors by municipalities, armed forces, forestry service, etc., again with no recorded numbers. So, bottom line, there's no telling how many all red tractors were made in 1976.

IH did, probably in the thousands for the Demonstrator tractors in 1950, including Cub, SA, B, SC, and probably some H and M (maybe others).

I can live with the white but that calf scours yellow is awful.....the only thing that should have been yellow was industrial equipment.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I knew the demonstrators were white.........but I never understood why. Back in the day tractors weren't a novelty, so when bought they got used........not stored in the garage or a shed. And as everyone knows machinery accumulates grime, grease, dirt, etc. So painting something like that white makes no sense to me for any reason. I really would love to know who came up with the idea to paint the demonstrators white and why. Other than the reason that no other tractor company painted their machines that color......I'm drawing a blank. And if that was the reason.......it should have told them something.

It was to make them stand out. IH looked at several possible color schemes for the white demos. They didn't mean for them to stay white either, just long enough for the Mid-Century Program.

I think Cubs, the Super A, and the C were the only models officially part of the Mid Century Promotion. You see other models painted white but that is owner preference, sort of like painting one green and yellow.
