We have to go to town today, so I'm going to pick up some more acetone, transmission fluid & scotch bright pads so I can start cleaning the head.

Why not unhook the connecting rod from the crank and knock the liner and piston out together as Jim suggested? The liner and piston will probably have to be replaced anyway.

I was just trying a couple of things, but you're actually right, I need to grab the bull by the horns.
I've got Dr. Appointments tomorrow, so maybe Friday I can start. I'm going to need to ask a few questions before I start though cause this is brand new to me.

Not much new to report. Three of the cylinders will let diesel leak through, but one is very stubborn and holds it like a bowl.
Might try some Marvel Mystery Oil just to see, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm mostly just piddling now. I'm not real sure what I can do. I know it needs split and a total rebuild, but that's way over my head. I don't even have the necessary equipment to do that.
I've had fun playing with it, so all wasn't lost. Besides I've got more time than money as the saying goes.

Patience and small moves will be your friends here. If you haven't already tried it, you could use a piece of hardwood to tap on top of the stuck piston. Heating it will probably help as well, the heating and cooling cycle helps break the rust bond. Just go easy and try not to actually break anything! And if tapping doesn't work, then removal of the liner and piston is your best next move.

I just had a thought. By it having stepped pistons, would this indicate it's been overhauled during its lifetime?
I'm just trying to think though some of this stuff.

I wasn't able to do anything today. Dr. Appointments and bad weather. In fact, I think it's brewing again. I guess I must have the tarp secured pretty well, it's still over the engine.
I forgot to pick up some Marvel Mystery Oil, so maybe tomorrow I can get to Walmart.
On another note, I don't know if it's just my Walmart, but they don't carry automatic transmission fluid. They have one isle dedicated to motor oil, but no trans fluid.
Speaking of oil, everything is sure going to synthetic. Regular ol 30 wt is soon to go the way of the dinosaurs.
I don't guess I fit in this new fangled way they do stuff. Oh and I'll tell you something else, I ain't going to check out my own groceries either unless they put me on the payroll!

I got the Marvel Mystery Oil on top of the cylinder. I've never used that stuff before and it has a wintergreen smell. Someone on one of the forums suggested wintergreen oil, so maybe it will help.

I have a quick question. I'm a long ways away from cleaning the engine and I may have to take it somewhere, but let's say I get this bad boy unstuck. What's a good way to clean up those passages you see there. I thought about one of those bottle cleaners with the bristles.

Had a little misshap today. I carry the head across the shed and tripped over my toolbox. I dropped the head when I fell, but I think I hurt myself more than the head. Floor is plywood, so I think the head is ok. I twisted my ankle, skinned my knee and tweaked my back. I don't see too well which is why I don't go out there by myself too often. I ain't gonna mention it to wife. She's over protective.
Oh, I did get the head covered real good with MM oil and scrubbed with scotch brute pad and it looks better.
I am able to push all the valve springs in with moderate pressure. Some are a little harder than others. Is that a good sign?

I have a Super A at school my students are working on that I was SURE we could break loose, put some fresh gas in, and make it run. It looks like it blew a head gasket and the previous owners parked it with antifreeze in the cylinders. Three came out pretty easy. The #2 piston required brute force. I expect that's where you are at.
I still planned on cleaning everything up, throwing in a gasket set and putting it back together. Then this happened while we were trying to un-stick the rings.......did that, all by myself, with about 15 students watching. It was quite a day.
