Fun little hitch project for Paula's Cub, pic heavy

Postby Lt.Mike » Wed Mar 13, 2019 2:50 pm

Been knuckling down doing the projects I have to do, all the while in the back of my head figuring out how I'm going to do the ones I want to do.
We all do this right? Well having laid down body filler on my truck and now in a waiting period I gathered up some scrap metal, welder, grinder, chop saw and went at it. :D
Besides enjoying just having her new Cub and plowing snow next winter with it Paula will use it mostly to tow the landscape trailer and small JD 10P dump cart when she does yard chores and cleans out the chicken coop.
I opened up the drawbars center hole a little for a hitch ball with a 3/4" diameter bolt and it works fine for the landscape trailer.
I used it for a late winter branch collection. We get a lot and this is just from the from yard.

Image

The garden cart has a drop pin for the hitch and I suppose I could hook it up to an off center hole on the drawbar but I like it centered and set back a little, besides it gives me an excuse to play.
I took the scrap, shaped it, and beveled the ends to be joined with a weld.
I could build this without the horseshoe but its a small touch that Paula will like.
Image

Welded up...
The pipe will limit the cart from bouncing up and down in the hitch and how much paint it scrapes off .
Image
My welds aren't that pretty but they hold. I'm a better grinder than welder and body filler helps too.
I'll never claim to be a welder. :D
Image

Trial fit...

Here it is painted up and installed.

That is a JD 10P trailer which is pretty tough for what it is. I just wish it was bigger. They make a 13P but of course they didn't become available until after I bought this one.
Cabelas makes a much bigger version but comes at a much bigger price.
This took me a couple hours to make and I had fun with it.
Paula gave it a Big...

Hope you like

Mainly for the benefit of others that might read this, balls with a 5/8" shank are readily available.

Great hitch idea!! Using the horse shoe is really a cool idea. I wish I had thought of that...

Your Cub picture reminded me of a picture I have...

I may have mixed that up. It’s the smaller of the two available I used.
Still have to ream it a little.

I went to lookup the 10P and 13P carts for comparison and apparently there’s a 17P available now
I’d jump all over one if I could get one of those.
The one we have is the smaller one shown but it’s a heavy plastic body and has taken a pounding. I throw firewood in and haven’t been to kind about it though no harm is done.
The only problem is the tires don’t hold air and will need tubes.
Bob I’ll keep you in mind ;)

That 17P is something I’m going to keep my eye out for now. Wish they made it in red :)

I'm sure you got it right. The hitch holes are 11/16, not much smaller than a 3/4 ball shank. Some places have 2 choices of shank size -- like 3/4 and 1". Some others have a 5/8 available. Here is one:

Yes we do "like". You did a great job--and creative to boot! Nice touch with the horseshoe.

I have the same cart and use it now with my Cub. I use it for firewood and other chores. I too wish it was a little bigger. I am hoping to build a wagon soon like the ones people have discussed in threads. I like the hitch because that is my issue with the angle of the draw bar and the pin for the trailer. Too funny. Thought I was the only person who was using their lawn cart with a Cub. Can't wait to tell my wife.

They say the 10p cart is good for 500lb.s but I know I’ve loaded it with much more kinda crushing the tires down. Ya I know, not good but it holds up. That Red cart from Market is a good size. I especially like the ATV style tires. I get back in the woods with my tractors for firewood and it can be soft back there. The site doesn’t list a price and the closest dealer is in the Midwest. I doubt they’d ship it.
Gonna have to call and find out.
You guys would probably like my pipe gate closures. ;) I’ll post picks of that later today.
