My "New" Running Gear

Postby T-Mo » Sat Nov 02, 2019 6:06 am

I picked this up yesterday. I'm not sure what brand it is, but I have thought about redoing it and if i can find what brand, I wouldn't mind redoing it in the original colors. Any idea on what brand it is? David Bradley, maybe?

The colors remind me of New Idea-Horn or Electric Wheel Company. I can't say the gear itself does though. Horn used a crappy version of red a lot like the early Woods mowers.

From what limited research I have done, Electric Wheel Company built a few of these for different brands, including David Bradley and Montgomery Ward. But I'm just not that adverse in these, even with my limited research. The guy had two of them, this one and a John Deere. He wanted more money for the Deere one, and I thought this one was just as good of a condition, so for $150 less, this one came home with me. The seller was an old farm guy, and I hope that I am that fit and spry at 80 as he is.

Congrats on the new running gear.

If I didn’t know what brand it was, I know what color I’d be painting it. :)

Not knowing what brand it is, does open up what colors to paint it. More than likely it will get some red paint on it, but I'm still wondering what color to paint the rims. I'm leaning towards IH beige.

I can not tell for 100% sure but I think you lucked out and have an actual I.H. gear. Going by the rims, shape of the tongue it looks like some IH gears I have had. Those 8 bolt rims with the odd 4 pairs or 8 hole toward the outer edge, look identical to ones on my 1-PR corn picker, and I bet they are 16" tires. Get a wire wheel or brush and rub on the cast hub caps, or whatever you want to call them, and on the cast part of the hitch end of the tongue, I would almost bet you will find some IHC markings on the cast.

Let us know what you find I am curious.

As to color, red is always nice   , cream rims would look nice to, or even implement blue on the rims. I do not know what the original scheme would have been. Sometimes a pocket knife scratching around on crack and under side of things can revel hints of the original color.

My 2 cents,
Russel Foster

T-Mo, I vote with Russel’s idea of red with cream rims. I came very close to grabbing one like yours at auction last winter. You say you paid $150 less but don’t say what it cost to make it yours. I’m curious because I have no idea what a fair price would be for one.
I’d also try to buy it bare like that so I had half a chance of breaking it down to get it home on a 6x10’ landscape trailer.

I think you are looking at the original colors, red with green wheels. Electric Wheel usually stamped "EWC" near the hub on their wheels. That, of course, doesn't tell you much because they sold wheels to almost everybody. At least some manufacturers put a serial plate on wagon gears, often on the front or back of the frame. EWC and IH both did, at least for a long time. I'm not seeing a tag in the pictures, but maybe a closer look would find it.

Tires are 16 inch. There are no id plates on it. It has screw on grease caps. Two are missing, but the front ones have this on them.
