Here’s that tractor I was posting about the other week. I finally got it home and figured out what the issue is. Here’s the machine:

And here’s the issue:
https://flic.kr/p/2hPdsGr
As you can see, the crankcase had a bunch of water in it, and there is rust all over the inside of the cylinder on the right in this photo, which just bored. Rats!! The piston on the right with that top and the piston on the left was at the bottom, so that one on the left is OK, there was no contamination in the top end of the cylinders I don’t think. You can still rock the fly wheel through about 25% of its rotation over top dead center on the right side piston, and it feels OK there, so once I get this rust out, I should be able to spin the engine over. The problem is, how much damage is there to the cylinder? We’ll find out I guess...

That's a sleeved engine, correct?

They are not sleeved. It kinda looks like they are but they aren't.

Mike, you can pull the head off, remove the big end rod cap and push the piston out of the cylinder. Then you can hone the cylinder (a ball hone would work well here) and be good to go. A new head gasket and lead washers which you JD dealer will have will get you on your way.
If there is water in the crankcase make sure you get that out so the freezing doesn't cause more damage. Oh yeah, nice tractor!!

That’s ^^^ probably the way I’m going to have to go, but I put some magical goop on it and I’m going to see if it frees up with an emery cloth rub right now after sitting for a few days. I’ll get back to you.

This abrasive ball is what I used on my JD A when I took the pistons out. I sprayed liquid wrench in the cylinders and then used this on a drill. It did a very good job of cleaning the cylinders. Purchased from Harbor Freight. You will need an 6" extension to get all the way down the cylinder.

Some good advice from Ricky and Rodney. Let us know how it goes, Mike.

I’m on it! As it turns out, a friend of mine down the road had the type of cylinder hone that I needed already, so I am prepared for battle.

Clean the rust out before yo turn the motor , otherwise you pack rust in the rings and you know what happens when rings are stuck!---I would take pistons out and make sure everything is clean to start with!

I did. I got it apart last night and ran the hone through. Everything seems to fit nice now. Was planning to start reassembly tonight but the wife decided to rearrange the house. Gah. :-/
