2020 gardens
Time to be thinking a little about the coming season's garden's! Anybody have plans yet?
I am not sure if I can do much garden this year due to the prostate cancer surgery, BUT I am planing on trying a small one and see how it goes.
We have been living on the goodies we put up from last years harvest and I would hate to miss a season in the garden.

60 or more garlic plants taking up most of the small garden behind the in town house. Planted last fall and growing. Have a couple of end rows for radish and cherry tomatoes. Nothing else this growing season.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 2020 gardens
Probably not going to put out a garden this year, one of 2 or 3 times in my life. A lot of problems with arthritis, and a knee that is giving problems and may have to be replaced before long. Old age is so much fun.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: 2020 gardens
High Hopes, Low Expectations.
I spent last year preparing a small garden bed - probably a 25' square. Rototilled the grass, added 5 yards of aged horse manure, Plowed to turn it over and let Mother Nature soak it all in. Today it looks pretty white (snow) but I do have high hopes of ripe tomatoes, yellow beans, sugar snap peas, and such.
I think I will just be spending my time feeding the deer and rabbits. Guess my second garden addition should be a really tall fence.

Re: 2020 gardens
I had to fence my big garden to keep coyotes away from my sweet corn 2 years ago. So far it works! Deer problem not quite as bad as it was 12 years ago, mostly just running across the gardens. fence stopped that too. A coon now and then passing thru and possums in live traps all the time.
Hope to do this little garden by the house this year, not sure what to do with the big ones! --- plant green manure and plow it under this year?

A six foot, six wire, solar powered electric fence has solved my deer problem. I’m working on the corn-eating fox squirrels.

Re: 2020 gardens
I think my biggest challenge with a fence is the gate. I'll need a way to get the tractor in there to till. Regardless how tall I make the fence, the gate will be shorter and allow critters in. Fences just make tilling much more difficult! A solar electric fence may be in my future.

I don't have a photo and I'm 900 miles away and can't take one, but I used these on each wire to create about a ten foot wide opening for access for my tiller.

Re: 2020 gardens
I put in 10' tall T-Posts I bought at TSC, spaced them about 15' apart. Vegetable garden is 30' x 60'. Used the 7' tall Deer Fence from Home Depot, attached to the T-Posts with zip ties. Ended up putting an 18" tall strip of chicken wire on the outside across the bottom to limit the damage by the trimmer.
We have a 6' wide gap to get the tiller, etc. into the garden. I used a piece of 4' tall vinyl clad wire fencing for a gate.
Nothing fancy but it's worked for 10 years to keep the deer out.
Strawberry bed gets the same plus across the top to keep the birds out too! Gonna add the same to the raspberry patch this spring.

Re: 2020 gardens
After the cluster**** of a growing season we had last year, I'm struggling to get excited this year.
I ended up with some good watermelons because I irrigated the heck out of 'em. Had the water bill to prove it!
My dad will be wanting some rows run out soon for some broccoli/mustard, etc. soon......

Re: 2020 gardens
Last year was different for sure, but we still had enough harvest to do us and I only got less than 1/3 of the garden planted.
This year with fighting this prostate cancer problem, I think the little garden by the shed will be more than I can handle but gotta try! I can only be out for 1 or 2 hours before the diapers start running down the legs, so need to stay close to the house.
The little garden is about 70 x 90 or so and should suffice for us, just no give-away produce this year!
Strawberry patch might be a problem since I can't lay on my stomach on the creepers right now, so hope that problem gets better by berry pickin time. I can't bend over to do anything and the creepers are my only hope. I have used them for almost 15 years to be able to do any garden.
We didn't order any onion or sweet potato plant's this year yet, might get a few onion plants later, will cost more but gotta have my big onions! lol!
WE have a few seeds from last year that didn't get planted, so will use them this year.
Also want to start a few cabbage and tomato plants early indoors this year.
Sweet potatoes I can do without. Want to do a few rows of Norland, Pontiac, and Kennebec spuds. Still making french fries from last years crop and I have my french fry fix every day! lol! Kinda have a crave for them this time of the year and home made fries are great!--Don't care for the town fries, plus they are expensive!

Re: 2020 gardens
Sounds like it is time to put in 4' high raised bed boxes for the strawberries.
- Maybe not a 90' row though.
