Bolts attaching front axel fell off

I have two cubs. One is an A (1947) and the other is an F (1948). I used them both over rough ground last year and both had the bolts that attach the front axle to the frame shake out. Does anyone know what the correct size and thread that the bolts are? They were lost in the field before I knew it.

Are you referring to the bolts that hold the center pivot in in place?

Hi,
This is info for a Farmall Cub. I guess maybe you have a Farmall A also.

If you mean the bolts that hold the steering gear lower housing to the upper housing, there are 5 bolts in a circle that go in from below.
Below are pages from the Cub parts manual, showing the steering gear. The lower housing is number 21 in the pic.
It says at the description for 21 that the bolts that hold the lower housing to the upper housing are 7/16" x 1 1/4", 14 threads.

If you mean the bolts that hold the axle pivot pin in the housing, it says they are 7/16" x 2 1/4", 20 threads. All the bolts use lock washers. The 2 bolts for the axle pivot pin use nuts.

The bolts all need checking occasionally, and to be kept tight.

If you meant the bolts holding the lower housing onto the upper housing, I would put the bolts in and wiggle them in the threads, before tightening them, and check the threads for wear.
If they have been loose and someone was using it, the threads may be worn, and not hold much.
There have been people on here that needed to put in thread repair inserts, or replace the upper housing, because the threads were worn.

The "A" and the "Cub are both neat little tractors, but an "A" is an "A" and a Cub is a Cub. They are both, very much, supported on this forum but are very different tractors. Glen supplied the bolt sizes for the Cub but I suspect they will be larger for the A. I haven't encountered the front axle on an A. I'm sure someone here on the forum can help you with that.

He says they are cubs, but those casting codes don’t match the years. 1947 is a Q code and 1948 is a R code. Of course it’s possible the coded parts have been replaced at some point and his serial numbers say 47 and 48. Guess we will just have to wait in a response. And bottom line is it really doesn’t matter what years and codes, we need clarification on what bolts he is referring to.

I read this as he is talking about a Farmall A and a Farmall FCUB per the data plates. It seems that many people refer to an A as a Cub, probably because they grew up with an older family member erroneously calling as such.

Casting Codes??

Each casting has a day, month, and (letter-coded) year cast right into it. It gets a little confusing because IH started reusing year letters codes in 1970. There's a chart from a reliable source here:

Marvin, good to have you post on the Forum. Welcome!

Here's a pic of a F-Cub and a Farmall A side-by-side. The A is about 1/3 larger than a Cub.

Looks like the steering mechanism takes (2) 5/8" x 2-3/4" and (2) 5/8 x 3-1/2" N.F. bolts. The axle is held in place to the steering mechanism by a pivot rod.

Let us know if both your tractors are exactly alike (Cubs) or if one is slightly different than the other (an A and a Cub). Put another post on here and you'll have access to all the parts and owner manuals we have available on this site.
