Best gauge for SA 6v battery cable?
The SA I've been working on (and sold) needs new cables for its new 6v battery. I love the flexibility of the welding cables, so plan to help the new owner buy and install some new cables with the Fusion soldered ends. Wanted to get a consensus for which gauge would be best, all things considered...best current flow, cost, ease of routing, etc. Plan to go the first of next week to get it. I THINK 2/0 is what I used on one of my cubs, but not sure...oh, and it was 12v, so probably overkill!!

6 volts, you will need a cable capable of carrying at least 150 amps. 2/0 would probably be suitable. 1/0 would be a better for prolonged engine cranking, since it can carry more amps.

Nothing less than 2/0. Welding cables are cadillac.

https://www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Calculator-_ep_41.html
Above an automotive wire gauge calculator. I used 6 volts, 6 feet, 160 amps.
And I'm getting old and forgetful. 000 is larger than 00. Why do they do that? Some wire gauges, the higher the number the smaller the wire. Others, the more digits, the higher the number.
Edit. Below, another chart of battery cable sizes available at auto parts store.

on 6-v the biggest you can get! ---they are not cheap either! Keep them short as possible will improve the power to the starter too.

Agreed, Eugene. I don't know why but what I have also seen is wire gauge size 0 and numbers higher than 0 (zero) i.e. 16, the wire size is smaller, the greater the number, whereas wire gauge size 0, 00 (double ought), 000 (triple ought), 0000 (4 ought, etc), the wire size is larger, (the more zero's in the size designation.) Maybe some of the EE members can answer the question.

Re: Best gauge for SA 6v battery cable?
Found a length of 1/0 welding cable I had left over from one of my tractors...just enough for his negative cable from battery to starter. I took it over to him, so all he needs to do is add the Fusion terminals. I showed him a nice 90° angle terminal lug that would give him the best clearance under the back end of the fuel tank...a very close fit and potential zap spot with a wrench!!! Now it's up to him.
As a thank you, he came over with his 2 chainsaws and cut up a tree that had fallen a coupled years ago, that I wouldn't go near...it was covered with poison ivy!!! That was one tough old oak!!

Re: Best gauge for SA 6v battery cable?
The cable runs on the A series are very short. From the second cable link above 2 AWG is good for 300 amp for 4.9 feet and the cable run is less than half that. 2 awg is the OEM manual.
I bought a 1 gauge for a cub thinking that was a good idea and had a very difficult time getting it in place past the clutch pedal and even out of the battery box. The cable run is shorter in the A-series but very tight.
I know bigger is better with 6 volts systems but the larger cable makes it harder to get the cable in place and leads to some tight spots. I am just pointing out there is a cost/ trade off with the bigger than needed cable.
