Tell me what cordless drill to buy.

Time for a new cordless drill. Starting fresh after many many years with the Craftsman 19.2 volt. Looking for the best all-around, all purpose tool y'all have encountered. I don't have other battery powered tools I'm trying to be compatible with. I do have a Home Depot gift card, but I won't have trouble finding something else to use that for if not for a drill. So I'm wide open here.

I'm partial to DeWalt, but I'm thinking just about any known brand-name cordless drill will be pretty good. I have an 18v DeWalt 1/2" chuck with hammer drill function that I got about 10 years ago (before Li-Ion batteries were a thing). I'm still on the original two batteries and it works great!

I bought this Teccpo off of Amazon last year and absolutely love it. It's physically slightly smaller than most but it's not a lightweight. Comes with a carrying case, a set of bits & drivers, and an extra battery, plus charger. 2 year warranty. I've used it moderately for 9 months now and have yet to recharge a battery. I used it to remove all the drivers holding the roof vent system on the shed, used it to drill new holes, and used it as a driver to install all new drivers to fasten the vent system, as an example, and still am on the first battery without swapping or recharging.

I agree with Jim although I'm a Milwaukee guy. Most any brand name, with DeWalt and Milwaukee probably the top names should do you fine. I suggest that if you get a drill, that you get a hammer drill to add to its versatility. A brushless motor will give you longer battery life and more torque.
Whatever platform you decide to go with, look on eBay for additional (used) tools that share the same battery. A lot of times when a battery goes bad, guys will sell the tool and buy a new one since replacement batteries cost so much. Sometimes you can find a bargin out there.

I needed additional batteries for my Ryobi drill earlier this year. The best deal I found was at Home Depot: 2 Ryobi batteries, rapid charger and 1/2 inch drill for $80. Was less money than just buying a pair of batteries. I've been very happy with that drill, even though I didn't actually need it.

Using 20 V Dewalt contractor grade for all cordless tools.

Suggest picking one quality brand and same voltage package for all your tools. That way when a tool or battery dies you can replace it, no problem.

Manufacturers frequently offer the same tool in different grades. Select their better grade.

Package deals and sales frequently offer bargains.

Let me throw in a different option Mr Clintmo, if you do more spanner work than drilling work perhaps you could could consider a battery driven ratchet. Once a nut or bolt is loosened it spins them out or in very fast. it can also be very useful where movement is limited, because once you get it on the nut or bolt head no movement is required, it spins it off rapidly. Just a suggestion

My tools only get light to medium duty uses, as far as drills go, but I have Dewalt 18 volt ones. a 1/2 inch plus a 3/8 right angle at shop, and another 1/2 inch one at house I picked up used, though it makes a lot of noise, not sure how long it will last, also do not know what kind of use it got before I acquired it. They have all give me good service. If you had asked me 15+ years ago I would have said Makita, because of how well the ones we had at work held up, but I do not know if Makita is the same quality now.

Hello Clint, I still have the Craftsman 19.2 tools. I have bought sets at yard sales just to get the Li-on batteries and charger. I have 4 drills plus many other tools. If you have an investment in the batteries, I will send you a drill for just the cost of shipping. I will even throw in a flashlight!

This subject is about like the motor oil question! Pick a brand that YOU like! Be sure you get the latest technology to ensure long term satisfaction. For example, I've used, and been very happy with DeWalt 18v. tools, for about 15 years. I have a bunch of them and a bunch of batteries. Then the 20v. L.I. came along and I find that I have a bunch of very good, obsolete tools. Making the upgrade is a big bite but any new purchases are 20v. L. I . I think all the major players are incredibly competitive and you will be happy with any of them. Keep in mind future expansion, you may be buying only a drill right now but consider what you may want to ad down the road. You'll want that tool to also be available in the same platform. It might come down to color preference.

I personally have had very good success with Dewalt. My brother has several Porter-Cable tools that I feel are of much less quality and durability. Whichever brand you choose, get the biggest and latest battery technology.

Yes, Don, I have one of those. I use it mostly with my recip. saw, the L.I. batts. last longer than the 18s do.

I agree with others, get a known brand and invest in the best quality you are comfortable spending.

I have also been satisfied with DeWalt products. I had most 18 volt tools and use them all the time. Several years ago my wife bought me a 20 volt impact driver, I was amazed at the improvement in power, in a smaller package. I was facing the delimma I equated with having an 8 track tape player when cassette tapes came out I purchased the adapter Don mentioned and it works fine, but the battery is difficult to remove. I have since acquired several more 20 volt tools and have been satisfied with them as well. I think I am about to pull the trigger on a 20 volt chain saw
