Rear Tire Removal

Postby TallCoolOne58 » Mon Aug 17, 2020 11:50 am

My Cub has the 150 lb. wheel weights on each rear wheel, and a 26 pounder on each front. I need to jack up the left rear JUST ENOUGH to remove the left rear tire and rim assembly so I can replace the tube. Do I need to worry about it rolling over or flipping to do so?

I never had an issue taking one or both rears off...but I put sturdy, stationary jacks under the axles on solid 2 x 12's and didn't solely rely on the jack. You probably know this but wedges on the other 3 tires is a good thing. Once off, I have had a weighted tire put me through the hoop garage....they are pretty heavy and awkward.

Thanks man. No calcium just air, but I imagine those old school steel rims are heavy. I'm thinking I'll tie some rope around the tire to the disc or axle while I remove the rim bolts in case it wants to get away from me. Help keep things under control.

Sometimes taking off a right rear wheel will allow the tractor to flop over to the left (since the engine is hanging off that side and the wheel counterbalances it if jacking from the middle), falling off your jack. Play it safe and wedge the front axle where it meets the bolster.

I have frequently changed the width of my rear tires, which are calcium filled. I agree about putting blocks on the other wheels to prevent rolling, and stands to hold the tractor up.

I'm not a very big guy, I can muscle the calcium filled rear tires, but it takes all I can give it when working alone. Just use caution!

Wasn't bad at all. Air filled tires and rims aren't heavy, loaded into pickup myself. Glad I was smart enough to order new wheel rim bolts from TMTractor at the same time I ordered the tube. 2 snapped and all 4 were corroded thinner than they should be. Got 8 total enough to replace both sides.

Edited for clarity.

Read this post and you'll know why it's important to wedge the front axle.

Are the polymer blocks available or were they ever made? Looks like a good project. I would buy a set.

Rick Prentice designed and manufactured a set of cast aluminum wedges that work extremely well. PM him to see if he has any left.
