Woods 42

Postby zig79 » Sat Oct 03, 2020 9:40 pm

I have a 1949 Cub and I just bought a Woods 42 mower. I just need to know what all is needed for me to mount it on the tractor. I do have hydraulics.

Hi,
I don't know what year your mower is.
You have to have the IH drawbar to mount the mower's rear drive to.

Below is a Woods 42 owner's manual from 1958, it has lots of info, and shows parts for the mower.

Below is a manual from 1986, it shows the parts better to attach the rear drive to the drawbar, it has to have the 2 plates, numbers 45 in the pic on page 13.
The drive and plates are held onto the drawbar mountings with 4 bolts, lockwashers, and nuts.

On the Woods mower I saw, the splines on the PTO have to be clean and in good condition for the pulley hub to go on, and the splines in the hub should be clean too.
The pulley taper locks onto the hub as you tighten the 2 small bolts. Tighten them gently, they can break overtightening them. :)

There are a few versions of this mower. the -6 is slightly different and uses a different belt thnaq the other version.

the main difference of the -6 is the mower mounts to the mule drive mount with pins instead of bolts.

It will help if you can post some pics which will can do after a few posts.

Glenn, you don’t necessarily have to have the drawbar itself, but you do need the brackets

Zig79, hopefully you got everything needed to mount the mower when you bought it. Otherwise, unless you find someone willing to give you a deal, it can get a little expensive buying the parts needed individually. Quite often you can find complete mower and assembly cheaper than you can buying individual parts. Would help if you posted pics of what you have so we can give you complete info

@tmays The mower came off of a '48 cub. Mine is a '49. I have two photos of it while it was on the other tractor. I have all of the mounting parts except the bolts to connect the mower to the mule drive. I should be able to pick those up most anywhere. I just have no idea how to actually attach the mule drive to the tractor. I do also have the drawbar. The photo enclosed is the mower on the other tractor. I don't have anything better. I'm trying to see where the mounting brackets attach to the tractor.

Mounts on your 49 same as on the 48. Should be plenty of pics on here showing how to mount it. Do a search here and see what you come up with or better yet, do a google search or search YouTube. Basically, the drawbar brackets are mounted between a piece of flat stock and the end of the mule drive. On both ends. The mule drive ends are placed just above the drawbar, leaving enough room for the drawbar brackets to slide onto the mounting bolts on each final

@tmays, Yes, that is what I am trying to locate. Just a couple of pics to see where it lines up. I also do not have the bar to attach to my hydraulics to the mower. I guess I could use a heavy duty chain and S hooks.

Hi,
It is easy to put the mower drive on the Cub.
If the drawbar is in place, and has the 2 IH brackets that bolt to the final drives, you just put the drive on between the bar, and the bolts that hold the drawbar brackets on the final drives.
Then put the 2 plates on, with the drawbar bracket between the drive mountings, and the plates. The 4 bolts, nuts, and lockwashers fasten it in place.

Below is a page from the Woods owner's manual, number 46 is the piece in your pic above, it goes in the position in your pic.
The plates numbers 45 bolt it in place.

Maybe someone has changed your drawbar, and it has no IH brackets. Then you couldn't attach the mower drive. It has to have the brackets that space the bar down from the 4 bolts in the final drives.
Below are pics from TM Tractor of the drawbar and brackets.

Maybe you could ask the person you bought the mower from if he has the lift parts that are missing. :)
