How does it work?

Postby john2189 » Sun Nov 29, 2020 6:34 pm

I have a Honda mower with an hour meter. It’s pull start, no battery. Just safety switches that grounds out the engine ignition. So how does the hour meter work?

I would say it somehow reads off the coil.

When I fixed up my '48 Cub which has the magneto, I moved the oil pressure gauge back to its original location which left me an extra hole in the dash. I found an hour meter online and installed that. Someone at the Barnyard Bash cubfest figured out a way to hook it up and it works great. I will have to go look to see how we did it.

It’s a flywheel coil. Only wire going to the motor is the grounding kill wire.

You probably have a 6 volt battery to start it. This mower has no battery.

Yeah, I have a battery.
Then the Honda uses some sort of witchery.

I gave up trying to follow that guy within 20 seconds.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

ok i googled it there are three types.

1- a small wire wrapped around the spark plug wire which picks up electrical impulses. mine doesnt have that
2- has an internal watch batter that powers it. probably mine since it is the the motor kill circuit
3- works when it senses vibration would still have internal battery

I fast forward until he wrapped the wire around the spark plug wire.

It's reading the electrical impulses from the magneto.
