Crankcase breather

My 49 Cub has a port plumbed in the front of the block and also in the side of the top of the air intake. Only thing I can figure is it is for a crankcase breather tube.

It seems insignificant based on the size of the fittings and what the tube diameter would be. Is it Necessary?

Not needed, just plug the holes.
