cleaning rust off female PTO

Postby jdh » Fri Apr 09, 2021 3:13 pm

Morning gents, got my Brookfield buzzsaw last week, saw blade is off and getting sharpened, many thanks to Barnyard (Bill) for helping out with some guidance, just one final thing to do before I sandblast and paint......clean that female PTO in the drive. It's a bit rusty, I let it sit for a day and a half in a bucket of evaporust, it cleaned it up a bit, but its got a bit to go before that drive will go on. I'm inclined to get a Dremel and some wire brushes, I feel thats my best course of action, but I'd like to see what you guys have to say. And if that is the way to go, recommendations on brushes?

I think a Dremel would clean the inside flats of the splines but may not get to the bottom of the splines. You may need to find a small toothbrush size, steel bristle brush to complete the job. Buy steel bristles for the Dremel if you can, the brass won't last very long. I slit a piece of old garden hose to cover and protect the sharpened teeth on my blade, I think I could have shaved with it.

The worst of the rust is probably at the bottom of each spline, which is also where brushes will have the poorest reach. If there is much to clean out, I would probably start with a small rectangular (mill) file that has teeth on the edge. You have barely more than 1/8 inch of width at the bottoms. So find a file with 1/8 thickness. Most of the work will probably be done by the tip of the file. Once the worst is cleaned out of the grooves, a wire brush as already suggested is probably the best to finish the job.

Take a old file, grind the thin edge of it be close to the radius of the spine groove, then grind the end with a concave radius That goes from thin edge to thin edge across the front!

Now you have a push scraper to clean out the inner spline grooved!

Make sure you have a good file handle on there!
