12v distributor
When doing a 12 v conversion do you remove the timing advance weights from distributor?

Are you talking about an electronic ignition conversion?

Re: 12v distributor
No. I didn't know if the governor fly weights advance the spark or if the distributor flyweights do that. The SA I bought will not tolerate sudden throttle increase. I checked the distributor and there are no weights or springs. The PO converted it to 12 volts.

Re: 12v distributor
The distributor weights advance the spark. the governor weights are only for advancing the throttle. You need to rebuild or replace your distributor. Maybe the PO has the parts somewhere? If not, you will likely have to buy a donor distributor, if only the springs and weights are missing, you may can get them from Messicks, Steiner, or Case IH. JP at the bottom of the page here may can fix you up.

Re: 12v distributor
I think your best bet is to simply pick up another distributor. They should be plentiful on the used parts market. Be sure to get the correct one, different models have different advance curves. There is never a legitimate reason to remove those parts. The only IH dist., without advance, that I know of was on gas start diesels.

The joy of refurbishing the old Super A are all the stories that it cannot tell. I'll never know why the weights are missing. But I do know where another distributor is.
