SA To 140 Transmission Swap
Last summer I purchased a transmission from an early 50's SA to replace the one in my 1960 140. I finally got around to swap them recently and noticed the alignment pins in the SA transmission for the axel housing to the transmission case are smaller in diameter than those in the 140. They are 7/16" and the 140's are 1/2". Has anyone here ever run in to this mismatch before? If so are there any tips or suggestions as what to do? I really do not want to install it using small pins and large holes.

You could ream the 7/16 holes to 1/2 if there is enough meat around them.

Don, I think he has the opposite problem. The holes are larger than the pins.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I think Don is implying to remove the 7/16" pins, then ream those holes to 1/2".
Of course you'll need new 1/2" dowel pins!
But before reaming anything, best be sure the locations are exactly the same!

Re: SA To 140 Transmission Swap
You might consider using the Super A internals and moving them to the 140 case. You would need to do some checking to see if the internals would move without another problem.

Re: SA To 140 Transmission Swap
If he has a complete 140 (which he does), he already has the 1/2 pins. All he has to do is make the holes(s) in the SA xmsn 1/16 bigger.

Re: SA To 140 Transmission Swap
Thank You all for the suggestions. Reaming out the holes is probably the quickest way to go. I will need a good steady hand to do it keeping the hole in line and to size. The pins on the 140 measure .005 under 1/2" (.495) on the exposed part of them. If the internal part of the pin is undersize, I would need a special undersize reamer. I tried to get them out, but they would not budge. I tested them with a file, and they are very hard, not soft steel. Also, I went over the parts manuals for both tractors and mostly everything has the same part numbers. Pins Are different. The front seal went through some revisions but now all models take the same seal, The shifter slide clamp bolts changed numbers. Lastly of course the gear ratios were changed. That will not matter because they would be changed in sets. It would take some time to change those parts. But doable. I have not been able to check the differential on the 140 but if I go that route, it should be done at that time. It looks like either method is not going to be quick and easy as I thought it was going to be.

Re: SA To 140 Transmission Swap
As an alternative to doing it yourself, you could take the xmsn and a pin to a machine shop and get it done.

Re: SA To 140 Transmission Swap
Don, that is a good suggestion. I will check with My local machine shop. They have the proper equipment to do it and it would be done correctly. Meanwhile I still have do get at least one pin out. Thank You.
