New Super A owner

Postby DetroitDick » Sat Jun 25, 2022 8:39 am

Just wanted to register here as I have been lurking around the edges for some time. I was given a 1948 Super A tractor a few months ago. It had a locked up engine in it from sitting for the last 20 years in a barn. Since I have had it I have rebuilt the engine, replaced the water pump, new fan and a host of small things. Today I finally took it for a ride to warm it up so that I could re torque the head bolts. I have a couple of small ( I hope ) issues that cropped up. It acts like it is going to stall/miss then catches and takes off only to do it again. I can run the RPM,s up and it goes up smooth. I did have to clean gas tank/carb, and go through the governor. I did do a home head job on the engine and I have one valve seat that didn't clean up all the way. Just wondering if anyone might have a suggestion on things to check. Thinking it may just need to have the cobwebs blown out of it. I know without pics this is just a story so I'll post some up soon. Oh and I have a slight whine out the trans/hyd pump area. Where is the fill plug for the hyd fluid?? Got to get my post count up so I can grab a owners manual PDF. Thanks in advance

Dick

Re torqued head and reset valves to .014 hot. Problem seems to be gone. Drug the disk around my 2 acre deer food plot and it ran very smoothly in 2nd gear. Transmission has a little whine to it, or it's the hyd pump not sure yet. What a fun little tractor, I've been using a IH464 for all my plot needs. This Super A will fit in very nice. Now to go down the attachment rabbit hole......

Thanks Dale for the link, that will be very helpful in the future. I'm kinda OCD about this kinda stuff and can't stop myself until everything's working as it should. Maybe someone can help me out and tell me what my serial numbers mean FAA 250303 thx

The FAA says it is an A or Super A. The 250303 says it is a Super A built in January, 1948.

Too bad it wasn't # 250001-250081 that would make it a 1947 and only 80 of them were built. Way less still here today so they are super rare. My SA was built in early July of 1950. But if it was built only a few months earlier it would have been a demo and painted white instead of red and also would have been rare.

BTW DD,
you said you cleaned the gas tank. Did it have a lot of rust in it? Did you put in a sealer if it was rusty? Did it have a sock type pre-filter and did you remove it before pouring in sealer?

Thanks for the reply's, the gas tank just had old gas and looked like some crud. Inside not too bad, still has a shiny interior to it. By cleaning I just removed the glass bowl/shutoff and used some brake cleaner spray to hose the inside down. Then used a small shop vac to suck anything left inside out. The screen sock was still their but plugged up with old gas. A little carb cleaner took care of that. So Jan of 48 hu? then I have the 302nd Super A built? Still kinda neat although I think that it has a 51 engine in it. Just going by what I think the date code on the block is telling me. I could be wrong, guess I need to get the serial number off the engine and post it here. It does have a water pump but no stat in it. The sleeves are 3.125 ID too.

I would advise not using an electric shop vac in your fuel tank. You may get a nasty surprise fireball.

Close. It would be the 303rd regular production made.

Funny you said that. A buddy of mine had a 69 fastback mustang and gas tank had a pinhole so he took the tank out. Washed it out with dish soap. Filled it with water and welded the pinhole. Well tried welding it at least. As soon as it arc'ed it went BOOM. Blew up like a balloon. Luckily he wasn't hurt n I got a good laugh.

Lol ya I had already blown it out with air and it is a wet dry vac...but I hear ya. Reminds me of the day I was working on the wife's washing machine. I was using electrical contact cleaner to clean as I was replacing the motor. Well the washing machine sets back in an closet like area along with the gas hot water heater. Those fumes had built up in the room when the water heater kicked on. The explosion blew me into the hallway and took the top of her washing machine clean off. She got her new machine and I got to run around without eyebrows for a couple of weeks.

As far as the whine was told that was normal. My 100 is quite in 1st and 2nd, 3rd isn't bad, 4th well that can be a different story. Its better once its been warmed up and driven awhile but still noisy.
