I have a question about hauling. I have something that is too large for ups and will have to deliver myself. It will fit in my 1/2 ton. How much to I charge to deliver? Is it by the loaded mile?
Thanks for any help.

Hauling question.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.

wj - most haulers charge by the loaded mile. I see rates from a dollar a mile and up. I guess the question is have you calculated your anticipated expense for the trip? You could contact some local freight haulers and get a quote from them and charge accordingly. I assume you only want to recoup your expenses, not make a profit so you need to calculate what it will cost you to make the trip and add for your time.

John,
That rate is for the truck only, with nothing for the driver or his expenses. I wouldn't trust anything I own to a driverless vehicle.

You can go to the General Services office web page to get the current Gov mileage rates http://www.gsa.gov/Portal/gsa/ep/conten ... entId=9646
It currently is at 44.5 cents per mile it was at 48 cents a mile late last year. I agree you should consider your time too, the mileage rate is for fuel and maintance on your vehicle only.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

George you have a way with words too. You state the obvious yet make it sound like a startling relevation.

I spent 20 years dealing with the Gov. rate. That .38 or .40 per mile was for using your POV to haul yourself from point A to point B. It has nothing to do with hauling any kind of freight. I hauled containers around Norfolk when I first retired (1989) and the going freight was at least $1.78 per mi. Figured round trip. We got $320.00 for a load from Norfolk to Richmond so Do your own figguring. You don't have to get rich delivering for someone but less than $1.00 per mile (both ways) you will need to take a loan to complete the trip. Anyone can do it for less , I can get you all the freight you want. Good luck.

You may want to check with Yellow Freight, or R&L Freight if you need to ship a serious distance. I can usually ship lawnmowers for around $100. I got a Billygoat mower shipped from Michigan to here, Buffalo, NY, last spring for $98.
Usually, if it can go on a pallet, it runs around $100.
The only hangup is that you need to be able to load a semi-truck either by forklift or loading dock, and they will only deliver it to their nearest terminal, or a business with a loading dock or truck service.
Hope this helps.
