Massey-Harris Pony

I purchased a Massey Harris Pony today. I had looked at it yesterday at an estate sale but didn't give much thought to buying it. I had bought a pretty nice Cub within the last month which I plan to keep and was not comfortable spending additional money for another tractor at this time. Their price, I thought, was at the top end of its value. Two things changed my mind. First, I told my wife that while I liked the tractor, I wasn't comfortable buying at that price. She gave me a lecture whitch I hear occasionally and it goes like this: " We are seventy years old and in good health but the time is coming when we won't be able to do the things which we enjoy. We need to do those things now, a year from now may be too late". The second factor was that at twelve o'clock today prices would be reduced to one-half. I was by the sale about ten and asked if the tractor price would be cut to half. After a mini-conference they told me yes. I then asked if I could give them a check for half price and take the tractor if no one bought it before noon. Another conference and they came back and said yes. Twelve o'clock came, 12:30 passed, then 1:00, 2:00 and no call came. I assumed that someone had bought it before noon. I received a call about 3:00 asking if I could pick up the tractor this afternoon. So I came away very happy. One owner before me, a 60 inch Woods mower, a breaking plow, disk, cultivators, right angle pulley and rear wheel weights. The motor fires up the instant I touch the starter button and runs smoothly and sounds good, no smoke. Tomorrow is a new day, I will start cleaning it up and discovering those minor (I hope) problems which one doesn't see at first. All-in-all, a good day I think. Dan

Good deal.. even on a Pony.. they are nice.. they work nice although much different experience than the Cub from all accounts.

You should have a look at this: Pony, Cub, Oliver, Massey Fergusson and a Ford 8N.

I also have a Pony Owner's Manual. I will try to scan it and get it up on the server for you. I also have them as zip files..

I need info from anyone who is familiar with the Pony. Mine is missing side panels which would enclose the compartment beneath the tool box where the battery and starter are located. A picture of the Pony on the YT board shows these to be present so I assume that mine had them at one time. A more puzzling problem is the lack of floor pans on which the drivers feet should rest. There is a ten by thirteen inch opening on each side. A narrow two inch metal strip to the outside of each opening could serve as a foot rest or they could be placed on the brake and clutch rods beneath these openings. There are no holes in the metal surrounding the openings to show where floor pans were once bolted down? Did Ponys come from the factory without floor pans? I have started on clean-up and have removed about 37 pounds of gray gumbo mud. Looks like concrete but is much softer. I still have a ways to go on that project. The carb has a leak so new gaskets needed there. The exhaust pipe extends about sixteen inches above the hood and is capped by what appears to be a round lawnmower muffler. That is going to have to go as there is no way to install a rain cap. I believe that the family representative has gone back to his home in Houston. However, I know the folks who managed the sale so they can probably get permission for me to go back and search for the missing panels. Dan
