184 alternator?
I recently purchased what I think is an alternator from a 184. It is a Delco Remy unit but does not look like a 10 si. It also has a large ceramic terminal strip on the back. Does anyone know what the function of the ceramic piece might be or even if this is a piece from a 184? Thanks. Joe

Re: 184 alternator?
The 184 used the garden variety 10si. I think the ceramic item you're seeing is the resister for the ignition coil.

Re: 184 alternator?
I was hoping it might be the resistor for the ignition switch.

This might help;
http://www.ihregistry.com/wire/K17.pdf
The resistor is used to excite the alternator, pretty much like using a light bulb without the light The resistor is not in the ignition circuit.

Re: 184 alternator?
Thats a good schematic. Couple things. Where do you think that light green lead is going? Kinda ends in mid air. I'm guessing the sawtooth symbol is the ceramic resistor?

Re: 184 alternator?
The sawtooth symbol is indeed the resistor. When the ignition is turned on, voltage is applied to the coil, voltage to the light green wire is also applied. This voltage is reduced through the resistor and then applied to excite the alternator through the small connector. The red/black wire coming from the same connector is the "sense" which the regulator uses to monitor when/when not to charge.
