Which planter is this?

Postby jonboy » Thu Jan 09, 2014 11:01 pm

Can anyone identify this planter? Is it a 172? I don't intend to use it but I'd like to know what it is and document it before I remove it.

That is what it looks like to me but you might want to ask Boss Hog.

it looks like a single seed hopper drive. Not sure what is on top of it. I see the fertilizer drive laying on the platform. Is the base on top? Missing the runner.Probably a 172 or 174.

I believe its a POAX hopper drive with some missing parts. Arm on platform is a fertilizer drive. Do you have the runner and associated parts? I believe the difference in a 172 and a 174 is in the runner(being able to float).

All you have are parts, you may have enough for a side dresser, If you have the hopper to go with the fertilizer base, that is if there is a base on that arm on the platform. I see that is does not have the correct pin for a 174 planter if you had the runner for it. My guess is that it may at one time had a 170 or older 172 planter.

Thanks for all the responses. I realize the hopper is missing and also the bottom pieces. This was an over engineered piece in my opinion. I think if I was going to use a planter, I'd get one of the drag behind versions.....it would be pretty cool if you wanted to show a tractor with the factory planter I guess.

Here is my 172. I am now using a 184 off my fast hitch. I still have a 172 if I wanted to plant with it or use just the planter drive section to run a fertilizer unit. I currently am fertilizing with horse manure. I perfer the 184, easy on and off, and better seed drop. You can alway piece together the rest of the planter/ runner/hopper or fertilizer unit should you choose to at a later date. Or you can sell the unit you have to offset the monies needed for repairs, your choice.

Kirk, that's a beautiful tractor you have there. It looks like to me these planters would take a while to remove and install. I guess people that actually use them leave them on the tractor? I did see a planter that had two hoppers, with one up by the distributor. I'll have to count all these chains and sprockets to see what I have. I think I have another rail of gears.....

Here is a shot of the planter off the tractor. Your planter drive base will look a little different because you would have a different hopper than the richmond hopper on my planter. Probably the two hoppers you seen were a planter hopper and a fertilizer unit hopper that is driven off the planter drive. Might be best to look at some of the manuals for the planters and fertilizer units on this site.

Kirk, thanks for the close up pic, it really helps to see how it's laid out.
