Paint, because I did it wrong last time.

Postby AndrewSpencer » Wed Apr 17, 2024 4:19 pm

So in addition to not setting the pressure plate correctly, I didnt setup my spray gun or mix the paint properly, so looks like I get to do both again, perhaps correctly this time!

I sanded, cleaned (glass cleaner, bug and tar, and alcohol) and sprayed epoxy primer which came out perfectly. It grabbed really well and is holding up stupendously. sanded, cleaned then I spraying the factory IH red with the hardener (they are proud of the price of that hardener!) however it is flaking off every time you look at it funny.
Mistakes I know I made:
Too big of a spray tip
Too high a pressure (to make up for too big of a tip)
No thinner (chemo drugs dont do good things for logic)

Questions for you all:
For a 53, should the rims be silver? If so where do you find the silver?
What ratio of thinner do you all use?
Anything else I am missing?

Anyone in md that wants to help with mine and we can do yours, too?

I use Rustoleum hammered silver on my rear wheels.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I hope you used appropriate PPE when you sprayed with hardener.

Don, it probably was one of your posts that prompted me to do so, and yes, full tyvec suit with a fresh air respirator.

Reducer ratio will vary with different paints but a good place to start is 3 parts paint to 1 part reducer. I adjust the ratio till I’m happy with how the paint sprays and lays down.

So... since the paint is flaking, do you have to sand or sandblast it all off and start over? Just putting another layer on it will not help with flaking.

Life, one volvo and two jeeps that needed immediate attention, pulled me away.

It appears the primer is adhering really well, i think i can get away with a heavy sanding then back to the paint. I will get some photos and see what you all think.

A lot of times primers or paints in general have a re-coat time. Epoxy primers can harden over time and not allow themselves to accept another coating.

Both a mechanical adhesion (sanding) and a chemical adhesion are needed for some systems. If a primer or topcoat sits to long between coats it can get to hard for the next coating.

Also if you use 2 different coating manufacturers that could be a problem. Most coating companies don’t test their product with a competitors for compatibility
