I've always been one to plan ahead so back in 1989 they were predicting a double nor'easter and we got it. Planning ahead I figured if I park the car down at the end of the driveway and the truck right behind it I'll only have to shovel out in front of the car and I can drive right out onto the street. Yeah,,, right. To make matters worse the storm had reversed overnight and turned to freezing rain so there was a minimum of one inch of ice on top. You could walk on top and never break through. I had to use a tomato stake to find the back bumper of the car and mark it before I could begin to find and dig out the car. That drift over the car and truck went all the way to the highway and by the time it got there it was 12 feet deep. The highway was blocked so they brought in a road scraper with a giant V-plow. He backed up and hit the drift three times before it started to seperate. Worst storm in my lifetime here in eastern PA and I'm in no particular hurry to see another so when these sky-is-falling predictions fizzle I'm a happy camper.

About 4 inches total here not the 18 we were told it would be. I don't know how the weather service measures it with the wind blowing it around. Very cold. I think yesterday was a high of 6. I wasn't going to clear the drive until tomorrow but nephew was driving by and when it wasn't plowed stopped and plowed it. He had some accounts to plow out. So I didn't even have to venture out. Warmer than normal by end of next week with high of 50. Believe it when I see it. I may let nature plow the rest for me. Vern

Guys,
Been lurking around but not postin much in a while. Here on Grand Island (between Buffalo and Niagara Falls) we had snow for 36 hours straight and winds in the 50 mph range. True blizzard conditions. I didn't leave the house yesterday but spent 3 hours digging out today around lunchtime, just to find it all drifted back in again this evening. Had to dig out a trail in the back yard for the dog. We have a solid 2 feet of snow on the ground and drifts over4 to 6 feet near the house and fences. Finally saw the plow trucks running tonight and the snow band moved to the south of Buffalo, so I'm hoping to dig out tomorrow. Too much snow for tractors with plows so I'll be using the tractor and loader.

Merry Christmas to everyone!!

A friend of mine from church stopped by yesterday and plowed out my driveway because I just didn't feel up to it. That's the first time I've had to rely on someone else to open my driveway since I was fresh off of a hip replacement years ago. It's good to have a church family and good friends.

Aron has been on storm call since the 13th, first for the storm that hit last weekend in western MA, then up to NH, followed by getting put on hold for Central Maine Power on 12/21. He is in Rockland, ME and won’t be home for Christmas. This morning there were 240,000 CMP customers without power. They never fully recovered from last weekend’s storm. He’s working 16-20 hours per day!
Keep the lineman, mechanics, tree crews, and others in your prayers as they work to restore power while being away from their families for Christmas.

My sister reposted this on Facebook, and it struck me as so true! (Apologies to those who can't open this Facebook link... it's praise to the REAL award-winning "Linemen"...not the ones on the football fields!)

NOTE: Here is the text:

I am once again reminded that the most valuable linemen are not in the NFL. They are the ones that climb up poles and crawl into lift baskets in frigid temperatures to maintain and restore our lifestyles. Thanks to all the fine folks who go to great heights to provide comfort for the rest of us.

Aron is a road mechanic for Sparks Energy. Yesterday he was notified that he will be heading to North Carolina once Central Maine Power releases them. Sparks has a fleet in the Kings Mountain area, but no mechanic, so they are struggling to keep the linemen running.

Well, next time you see him, give him a big hug from an NC-er who lost power yesterday around 7am with single digit temps, but had it restored by noon!! Not Aron's work, but appreciated none the less! Was not looking forward to burst pipes!!

Thanks to ALL who make our lives safer & more comfortable! :worthy:

Several years ago, my neighbor bought a plow for his truck. On the evening before Christmas Eve, I heard a rumble in my driveway. I went to look to see wjat was going on. I saw him as he was exiting my drive. I live on a corner lot and our driveway comes in off one road and goes out the other. What my neighbor didn't realize was that with all the Christmas decorations I have to run several heavy duty extension cords acroos the drive to power the lights from my barn. As he exited, I could see the cords, as well as many lights and figurines being torn from where they had been mounted. He did'nt see the damage and just blew his horn and waved.

I had to go out and unplug anything that was damaged. Two of the heavy cords were cut in half and several light stands were as well. Christmas Eve is a big night with many cars slowing down as they pass, or they drive through to view everything. I spent all day on Christmas Eve day getting everything fixed so the kids passing by were not disappointed.

I know the guy was just being neighborly, so the next time I saw him I simply thanked him for his gesture, but I did ask him to leave the plowing to me since I enjoyed doing it.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

For you guys with trucks that won't crank, I have one of these and it absolutely works, I've used it to start cars for people. I have one in each vehicle. At $60 it's cheap insurance.

Rick, I hope you are feeling better and that there are no long lasting effects from covid. It certainly is nice to have people who help when needed.

I also would like to thank the county road crew who kept the roads passable through out the storm even though police were asking people to stay in and rightly so. We simply holed up, something not everyone can do. Emergency crews were busy.
