1961 lo-boy leak
Just brought the new 61 boy home today and started mowing. all good until I shut him down. Noticed oil leaking from threaded hole in clutch housing located bottom dead center of the bell housing forward of the hand hole cover. Quick fix to just buy a plug? if so what size is it. Thanks in advance. will post pictures of the new machine soon. Dan Nelson. Browsed the service manuals here and didn't see any threaded hole plug.

Re: 1961 lo-boy leak
Welcome to the FORUM Dan. Indications you have an offset Loboy which is identical in many respects to the std FCub. Likely the leak you are seeing is from the rear main seal on the crankshaft which requires a split of the tractor to replace. Replacement seals don't fit the retainer so be aware of that so when you fix the problem, you truly get a lasting repair. Search the Farmall Cub forum and you'll find lots of info on this subject. Forum member tst machines the retainer and installs a seal that fits. The parts manual that covers the FCub and Cub LoBoy is TC 37F. This Forum page is dedicated to the Number Series LoBoy, 154, 184 and 185.

Re: 1961 lo-boy leak
Hi,
The small hole under the flywheel and clutch is an oil drain hole, it has no threads, and is supposed to be open, so any leaking oil can run out. Don't put a plug in it.
Below is a pic from TM Tractor showing the bottom of the clutch housing. The hole is at the left of the housing, and the hand hole also.
If you just bought the LoBoy, you should check or change all the fluids before using it for work. It can damage the moving parts to use it without enough oil in any of the housings.
There are 3 separate oil levels to check in the rear of a Cub or LoBoy, in 3 separate gear housings, the transmission, and 2 final drives.
It is common for the trans to get water in it, from rain, or condensation inside the case, over time.
If it has water in it, it needs an oil change.
The owner's manual shows how to check and change the oils.
There is also the air cleaner oil, and the steering gear oil, besides the engine oil.
Below is the 1957 LoBoy owner's manual. The experts on here recommend that people read it, it has much info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.
It has more info than the 1959 LoBoy owner's manual, which has the hood and grille like yours does, if it is still original.

The trans has 3 oil plugs.
The filler plug is on top of the trans, to the rear of the shifter.
The oil level plug is low on the left side of the trans, fill it only to there. It holds 3 1/2 Pints of oil.
The drain plug is on the bottom of the trans, visible from under the platform.
The final drives have 1 oil plug each, visible from the rear of the tractor, near the tires. Fill them only to the level of the holes. The plugs are in a different position on the regular Cub.
You have to remove the pans, facing ahead, to change the oils. The pans have gaskets, and you may need new gaskets if you remove the pans, and the gaskets tear.
Below is another page showing maintenance recommendations.

The throwout bearing has a grease fitting, and needs greasing.
The fan hub needs it's oil level checked too, guys have written on here about them getting low, on the Cubs, and seizing. Good Luck with the LoBoy.

Re: 1961 lo-boy leak
Up date on the leak, seems that the oil pan bolts are vibrating loose when I run the mower. Not loose by a lot but I can get a quarter turn or so out of each one. Mower has very little vibration if at all. Is this a common problem on these? I figured that I would just put on some lock washers and call it a day. Any suggestions for ease of tightening the oil pan bolt located right by the flywheel about the only thing I can get on it is a nut driver

Re: 1961 lo-boy leak
There are supposed to be 5/16" lockwashers on each oil pan bolt. Those rear 3 bolts behind the clutch housing cover plate are a real PITA!! In addition to being difficult to get to, you have to be extremely careful not to strip the threads on those, as they do not go into the engine block like all the other oil pan bolts. They screw into the relatively soft metal of the rear seal retainer.
Try a short 1/2" socket (I ground one down) on a 1/4" universal with an extension and 1/4" ratchet. Others have used flexible extensions, and I finally order a 1/2" short universal socket. It was pricey, but worth it!a
Good luck!
