Field wire from generator to light switch

Nobody may pick this up since its older. I'm not clear where the field wire goes on the switch.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
If you are wiring the Cub the 6 volt, original way, with a relay on top of the generator, you have to have a 4 position, charge and light switch. It controls the charge rate of the generator, and turns the lights on or off.
The switch positions are L H D B. Low charge, High charge, Dim lights, and Bright lights.
You have to control the charge rate yourself when using the Cub.

IH changed to the voltage regulator in mid 1950, and they use a light switch that is only a light switch.
If you bought a light switch that is only a light switch, it won't work to control the charge rate. Maybe you knew this already.
Below is a pic of an original 4 position switch for the relay system, from TM Tractor. The field wire connects to the right end, in the pic, of the resistor, according to Barnyards diagram that he posted.
The resistor is at the bottom of the switch.

Heres the light switch that I have. I'm using barnyards diagram in the previous post. My regulator is not top mounted. Mounted on a side plate. Looks like his diagram if for the old style switch which leaves me figuring out where the field wire should connect.

Dash 3 position regulator.jpg

The dash picture if from another member. Itls set up like mine, just not clear about field from generator hook up.

Thanks

Maybe these will help you. The other end of the dash pic above.

Thanks Rock. I think you sent the first pictures for me. I have my dash wired like your picture. The only question is when I run the field wire off the generator where does it hook up?

Thanks!

The problem here is that people are trying to answer based on a '49 with a magneto, but none of your components in your pictures today match that description. Your light switch is '58 or later, regulator is '50 or later. What generator do you have? Get the part number off the Delco tag.

With a regulator you do not use the F wire running to the light switch, the field goes from the F terminal of the generator to the F or FLD which ever way it is marked of the regulator. That is the same whether the regulator is mounted on the side, or on the top of the generator to replace a cutout. The only time the field lead goes to the light switch is if it still has a cutout.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi,
Sorry if I confused you with my first post above, it is for what a 1949 Cub would have originally had.
Yes, Barnyard's wiring diagram in the other post is for the relay type system.

Someone has changed yours to the newer voltage regulator, like Jim said, they came out during 1950.
They have different wiring than a relay system had.

The Field wire for the regulator system is a short wire that goes from the generator F post, to the regulator F connection. There should be letters marked on the regulator connections.
The A wire is short also, and goes from the generator A post, to the regulator A or Gen connection.

The 2 wires originally go to the left from the generator, and curve around under the gen, to the regulator.
Below is a wiring diagram that has been on here before, it is the 6 volt system with a voltage regulator.
It has the 3 position light switch though, used from 1950 - 1958.

The model number on the generator plate is 7 numbers, 1100501, 1101355, etc. :)

Per what I can make of it and the guy at TM I have..
Gen A to gen on regulator

Gen F to field on regulator

Bat on regulator pos ammeter

Pos on ammeter to fuse holder

Out of fuse holder to to B on light switch

One side of light switch (either side with coiled wire) to headlights.
That was a mouthful......whew!

A lot of this came from TM where I got the parts. Not showing a charge this way.

Since your tractor came with a side mounted regulator, it would have come from the factory with a regulator unless someone was real ambitious. In that case rather than a lead from the ammeter to the fuse holder there would have been a lead from the L terminal of the regulator to the fuse holder. Either way will work, so there is no reason to change it unless you want to, To tell if your originally had a cutout look at the generator. With an original cutout the generator would have 2 threaded holes, each about 1/1/2 inches from the top of the generator and about center end to end. Also the rear end (opposite pulley end) would have a screw head a little up from the center to loosen for adjusting the 3rd brush.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi,
Raymond Durban's database says that Battery Ignition, the voltage regulator, and the 3 position light switch came out in 1950, at serial number 115403.
Someone has probably changed parts if a 1949 Cub has a voltage regulator.

A generator for a Relay was model number 1101355.
The first generator for a voltage regulator was model number 1100501, used until the mid 1950's.

If you have wired it like in the diagram I posted above, it should work.
You have to speed up the engine quite a bit to start it charging, I think, before the larger gen drive pulley came out, in the early 1950's.

If it won't charge, and is connected correctly, the generator, regulator, or ammeter is not working.

Or it could have a ground problem, if you have new paint. Remove paint, so the regulator base can get a ground.
If there is a small wire made on the regulator going to one mounting, that is the side where it grounds.

John by your description it originally had a cut out. The generator is as you described.

It is unusual for someone to go to the work of finding a mounting bracket and extending the wires down the side rather than using one of the saddle mount regulators that fit on top of the generator. I assume it has a distributor rather than a magneto. since the original style regulator bracket will not fit with a magneto.
