$1400
Getting ready to tear into the 49, putting to gether my plan. wont actually start till january probably. put a call into a local one man shop (good rep) who rebuilds motors. supposed to be best in area. anyway, he called back today. i take him my running engine (no problems currently, no leaks even) and for just $1400 i'll get a completely rebuilt engine.
I was thinking about doing a complete rebuild, until i got that estimate. The motor runs fine, actually better than others that i use. so i dont think i'll be doing a rebuild on the motor.
my question is, is this price a little excessive?

Well, I'm in this boat where I'm looking at purchasing a replacement engine, standard size from TMTractor.com. $235 +$60 to ship. Ok so even $300. A complete rebuild kit, valves, pistons, gaskets, rods, etc... will cost me $500. I'm looking at a little elbow grease and I've got a complete rebuild for $800.

My initial thought was that $1400 was a bit much considering I do most if not all of the work myself.
From the mechanics perspective $1400- is a fair price. The mechanic was going to do all of the work. Plus, he has his wages, the shop overhead, and a cushion in case there are any surprises to contend with when he disassembles the motor.
The shop rate at the local New Holland dealer is $50.00 per hour for small jobs. $50.00 per hour shop rate is low compared to other areas of the country. I have around $800- a rebuild. I can easily see another 12 hours, $600- in labor, if the local shop did the rebuild.
