6v to 12v conversion

Postby kully560 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 2:20 pm

just a quick question I have a 1959 IH cub lowboy running 6v now ,if I convert over to 12v can I use the same 6v starter ? the reason I am thinking of the change over is I would like electronic ignition and pertronix sells a 6v positive ground and also a 12v neg. ground. I would like to keep the 6v now because it is easy , but if down the road something happens I do not want to be sorry for not doing it now. thoughts kind regards

is it worth the extra money to do the 12v now or leave well enough alone?

I still have my original starter on and I converted to 12v with electronic ignition... I've had no problems with starter. Just make sure you have the proper coil, I had one fail on me

If you go with electronic ignition (which I think is superior), you will need to upgrade your coil. Starter can stay as is. Get a one wire alt for simplicity, and 12v battery. Make sure to change your lights too if you have them.

I am a 6 volt fan. I just like it is different.

There are many reasons to switch but ease of starting is not on of them.

would switch to 12 volts for the following reasons:

1) generator dies. A profession rebuild of the generator will cost you some money. You can get kits and do it yourself.
2) you want to use a sprayer or other device that needs 12 volts - I just use a battery when I want to do that.

Now I do use LED lights to reduce load improve lighting and a solid state regular for the reliability of the charging system.

Pop changed the 63 over to 12v at least 40 years ago....still running the same starter, although I put brushes in it 5 yrs or so ago. Still running the same generator too...

I put ignition parts in almost never...I’ve probably put $50 in points, condenser, plugs, etc on two tractors in the last 5 years...but they only mow 2 acres between them...

Pertronix has the name, but my experience does not show a payback...the 12v...the tractors start down to 10 below...I’ve never had 6v perform down to that temperature...even though others have.

Really your choice. But, if you think you will need to convert to 12 volts in the future, suggest in doing it now.

Like wise. I do not see any economic benefit to installing the Pertronicx.

I have had mixed results no luck on 2 different 6 volts tractors and 12v ran great no problems 2 years, one 12 volts worked great until it did not and was converted back to points.

I think not so far in the future, originality is going to be a very desirable thing on these tractors. I try to keep mine as original as possible, and yes it will start in any temperature we get in this frozenstate. Many times a 12 volt conversion is needed to help make up for other issues. If your tractor is tuned and in good condition it should always start

This is the 12V alternator I put on our '47, it's a true one wire alternator meaning you don't have to have an excite wire or a switch to it.

I made mine.
Search function, top right of page for how to and dimensions on self made alternator mounting brackets.

I made mine from scrap steel, hack saw, drill press, and welder. My out of pocket cost, zero.
