sucks fuel

Postby Rubee » Tue Nov 29, 2005 2:09 pm

Hi cubbers, I got a "new" cub, a 1948 and have been changing fluids, repairing wiring, governor set up,etc. and have really used this forum a lot. Now I'm into the carburator. It was flooding and gushing gas all over, so following Lurker Carl's excellent advice and descriptions I've seemed to stop the leaking and flooding, set the float height and drop. She uses a lot of gas(much more than my 1950) and starts easily without choking and runs well. I made up a tube to attach to the carb drain as per Lurker Carl and the gas level checks good at 5/8 inch. New plugs and check mag points OK. Any thoughts on why this cub is such a gas guzzler? Thanks, Rubee

Rubee - it's good to see you post again! I notice that each cub seems to have it's own fuel consumption rate. I really don't know why you have a gas guzzler on your hands. You don't have it equipped with any special equipment like a turbo, multi-port fuel injection or possum hide manifold do you???

Hey Bigdog, I don't have any of that high priced gizmos on her yet(possums seem to be in short supply except the ones with frozen tails and ears).Got the snow blade and chains on and just waiting for the big one so I can have some fun.--Rubee

You might check that a previous owner didn't drill out the main metering jet hole oversize.

I think it is supposed to be only .038 inch in diameter? That's 38 thousandths of an inch.

Rubee
I am over here in the St.Charles/Merrill Area about 45 minutes from you.

Does you 48 cub have loaded tires? or wheel weights? If that stuff is on there it will take more gas. My one cub has no loaded tires and no wheel weights and it goes at least twice and fast in third gear as my other cub that has wheel weights and loaded tires. I have had the set up on both cubs and which ever one has the loaded tires and wheel weights slows way down and I think takes way more power to run it so I am guessing my gas is going faster also. just a thought.

Carl can give you the correct numbers but I think 38 thousands is to big. I think the largest is 34 thousands, my cub had a 34 ths. and ran way too rich.

Thanks fellas, Wow I wouldn't think .004 difference would make much difference. I'm learning good stuff every day. I'll check the dia. next time I get into the carb.
CJ, both cubs have unloaded tires with rear weights. Deer hunting still good over on the state game area in St. Charles?

An increase of .004" is a big difference :!: That would be an increase of about 8% or so.

Rubee,
When you do get around to checking the dia. of the jet use caution not to distort the opening.

Rubee,

I see that you're back up and running. Is your computer any faster than before?

Hey Clem, Well the computer works,is slower than my cub in first gear but faster than roadkilt possem. Just my my speed. Donny, I'll use caution if I plug guage the main jet. I just don't think a p.o. would have a reason to open up the dia. but I will check. Thanks

Rubee,

I'm sure you have doen these things, but maybe a person following this thread can use some more tips:

Check to see if your Sediment bowl and filter are clean
Check Battery connection
Check your Governor control
Clean your air cleaner. Dirty air cleaners restrict the flow of air needed for the combustion process.
Use the proper viscosity of oil in the engine to maximize engine efficiency. Oils that are too thick decrease power and lubrication and increase fuel consumption.
Operate tractors in higher speed gears and lower throttle settings to conserve fuel and drive train wear. Operating tractors in lower gears at high engine speeds increases fuel consumption and wear on the drive train.

Don't be so sure. Some moron over on YT decided to increase the power of his Cub by enlarging the venturi of his carburetor. No number of comments from others kept him from doing it.

I saw the beginning, but didn't see any posts about his results.

Jim, I guess human nature demands that we fiddle with stuff we know little about. The only thing I know about carbs is that I better ask and follow the experts advise. I did and was really pleased with Lurker Carl's carb fixes. I hope the fella that wanted to open up the venturi listened.
