Cultivator 144 question

Postby AlanPCUBS » Sat Dec 03, 2005 8:59 am

I am working on getting a 144 cultivator for my 49. But I need to get some shanks for it and I saw that there are short ones and long ones. Do I need the long ones? I asoom the shorties are for loboys? and how many do I need I would like to run sweeps on it. Thanks again Alan

You can set them up a lot of different ways, depending on your crop, weeds and soil. But in general, if you have the front set up with just shanks, the front one on each side is short with the rest long. The tool bar extensions for the front ones are lower than the main tool bar. You need clearance under the tractor for the front left one.

Jim would that be a total of four on the front and two in back? Two shorties and four long ones.

Alan: Four oval clamps for shank attachment will come with the cultivators. I had not planned to include tool bar extensions but will search for some if you want them. Also, check for an e-mail requesting info on when to ship. It should have arrived last night. Dan

Alan,
They can be set up that way. Some pictures would probably help. Check out these pages. They also show shields, which is another matter. Some of the rest of that manual may also help you see what some of the possibilities are.

Is there a way of setting it up for full width of tillage? Or in other words all th ground under the tractor gets worked up.I dont have any thing to straddle or row I grow trees so I just cultivate between the tree rows.
thanks again Alan

I am not a farmer but wouldn't a disc do that. I have been able to chew up a lot of weeds with a 23 disc loaded with cement patio blocks.

Alan:

I would imagine that by adding more shovels, springs or whatever you are using would do the job. I would be careful though, especially if you are growing young seedlings. I would definitely be using the plant shields and guards to ensure that the young un's don't get covered over.

As for the disc harrow.., you might do more harm than good. Harrow is good to cut under the grass and stuff, but only if it has gotten to be quite established. Cultivators would be a far better option if you want to ensure no grass/weeds etc., between the rows.

Also, if you plant trees as I do with about 6 feet between the rows and columns... for lack of a better descriptor, you can cultivate in multi-directions.. that way you can ensure no grass/weeds at all.

In a few years you will have to skirt your trees, but then by then you could probably allow grass and then mow with the Cub...

Anyway you cut it, you can get seat time if you judiciously decided what implements you need THIS WEEK :!:  :D

Alan: I have a pair of cultivator shields if you decide that they are needed. They are very servicable, but very rusty, and the price will be very reasonable. I will never use them since I don't do a garden with the Cub. Let me know if interested and I will dig them out of my pile of cub stuff. Dan

There is a lay-off bar that goes in place of the tool bar extensions that will allow you to put a foot in the center. It is usually used when making up rows but will also allow you to plow full width.

Alan: As I have indicated to you by private messsage, you have no obligation to buy the cultivator set if it will not do what you need done. You must purchase the correct equipment to do the job. There is always a demand for cultivators so someone will need the type which I have. Sorry for the mix-up. Dan

Alan: An additional comment on the cultivator set. Let's be thankful that you discovered the problem before it was shipped. Neither you nor I lose on the deal. I still have the cultivator and you can locate and purchase the type which you need. Dan
