The Serial number on my Cub is missing so I am trying to determine the year based on casting dates. I am looking for thoughts on these images. CUB1 looks like a B (1956). CUB2 looks like G (1961). CUB3 is clearly an X (1952) if it is a date code at all.
Agree, disagree? or help to figure this out.

Re: Casting Dates
One casting doesn't tell you when the tractor was made, just when that casting was made. All (or at least a majority) of castings in a limited date span would give you a better indication of manufacture date.
Are these three pictures of the same Cub?
I'm pretty sure pic one ( L 2 X ) is not a date code.

Re: Casting Dates
Hi,
I guess you meant the date codes are on one Cub.
The Touch Control looks like it has a G date code.
The engine looks like it has a B.
You are right about the years of those 2.
The L 2 X is not a date code.
There are casting date codes on the larger castings on Cubs. They tell the date when the parts were made. They use a letter for the year.
Below is info from TM Tractor showing what the codes are.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/id_004.htm
The info below shows where the codes are.
The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.
The code on the last part on the page, the steering gear housing, usually can't be seen with the tractor assembled.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/castdate_loc.htm
There is an engine serial number, it is stamped on the left side of the engine.
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub operator's manual, showing where the engine serial number is, you may need to clean it to see it.

The engine serial number isn't the same as the tractor serial number, except on the 1st Cubs, in 1947.

Re: Casting Dates
These are all from the same Cub. I will check the other locations and see if I can locate the engine serial number.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Casting Dates
The cast code and well as the part # on the engine points to this as being a 1956 model. The L 2 X can be found on most, if not all, torque tubes.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Casting Dates
The torque tube cast code is behind/beside the clutch. If you have the battery cable clip that attaches to the panel, you may only be able to see the first number (month) and the final letter (year).
