1947 Farmall Cub grill color

Postby tim57chevy » Mon Oct 10, 2022 10:43 am

I have a question on the grill color on a 1947 Cub I purchased recently. In the picture you can see my cub grill is a rusty silver color. Were the cub grills in 1947 ever painted that color? Mine does not appear to have been repainted.

They were all red.

I could not say tractor when I was 2 years old so I called it Err Err.

I loved this tractor then and I still love it now.

It’s hard to tell if it is the fine mesh grille screen or the later coarse mesh screen. The very early ones were fine mesh. They were all red as Bill said earlier.

If you've confirmed that your serial number falls in the '47 range (501-11347), and the hood doesn't have a hole for a vertical exhaust, then your Cub may have had a later hood to replace the original. If that's the case, then the grille may have been from that later hood era (cream or off-white). That would explain it.

Also, the original mesh grille was 5 squares/inch. Other, more course grilles and mesh would be closer to 4 squares/inch (i.e. 1/4" squares).

Hope this helps.

But then it would have been an eleven bar grill.

This hood has the three ribs on the side. It also appears to have the long eared rear tank support. This is correct for an original '47 to mid-'49 hood. It either has the hole for the vertical exhaust or the hole has been patched.

I know this is an old thread, but it's new to me.

I have a very early '47 with the same grill. Did you ever try to see if there is red paint under the grey? On mine, I can see a bit of red in a few areas under the grey coating. It's got me puzzled.

Didn't the 47s have "Deering" in the name? It also looks like an original gas cap. You can get a free safety cap (see link below).

Inspectorjoe, from the little showing in this picture, your tractor may have not been repainted. The red of your grill looks more like it has. The red paint suggests your grill may have been on a different tractor. The grey is definitely a repaint. Even if the factory painted grey, they would not have masked off the edges for a second color.
