That doesn’t look like the Federal Yellow that a yellow and white would have left the factory with. Looks more like the yellow/green that Jim mentioned. There certainly were 79 Cubs painted red from the factory, though. How about some photos of the hood and grille?

Hi,
On an IH tractor I saw, the yellow changed color from the shiny color it is when new, and became a dull and sort of greenish yellow color, after years of exposure, I suppose.
But the tractor had been repainted, I think, so I don't know if it was federal yellow, it looked like it, but I'm not sure.

I bought parts at IH in the 1970's for my Cub. Some were painted red, some were yellow, and some were painted a little darker yellow, it had no shine, it was probably a primer. That might be what your gear shift plate has, if the shifter was replaced in the past.
Or it might be faded federal yellow. I can't tell in a picture.
The platform may be an original yellow one that has faded yellow paint, and was painted red, but hard to tell in a pic. Just my opinions. :)

My ‘66 Cub has red primer under the yellow. I like to say my Cub is in various shades of yellow and white.

Wait a minute... This is a 1979 Cub?

Then it is very likely to have been IH red originally. Unless I've missed something the legend is that IH returned the Cub to its original IH red for the last year of production, 1979.

I think that is a rural legend.

From page one of this post: SN 253610 which is 75 short of the last one listed for 1979 (SN 253685) in the Cub Info table listed above. :hattip:

For what its wort I have two 79 cubs; one is yellow and white, the other is factory red. So I guess you get them both ways.

Pretty sure it's in Updike's Cub and Cub Cadet book. Surely he would not lead us astray?

It seems very odd to me that I would be the first to point it out after 2 pages of discussion on this forum of all places. Used to be when a red 79 cub came up for discussion here everyone would dance around in celebration like the Ewoks at the end of Return of the Jedi

I don't have that book nearby right now. Maybe I'll remember to take a look another time.

Well, at the very least SOME of the 79's were red from the factory.

I guess I'm a few years out of date with my information, as some discussion on this forum has unearthed a significant number of yellow and white 1979 models. Maybe only the VERY LAST 1979's were 100% for sure red, like the last day/week/month of production, a few dozen at most?

I am aware of factory red tractors interspersed with the yellow and white as early as 1977, and definitely some from 1979. So it's not like there's no such thing.

I've read that Cub Cadets were sold red at IH dealerships and yellow/white at Cub Cadet dealers. This was only the last year or two and for the 82 series. I don't know if the same is true for the full size Cubs.
