I wrote this several years ago and got no comments, please give it read so the rest of my post makes sense.

There is now too much freeplay, it looks like the throwout bearing is worn to the point that with the clutch fully depressed the clutch does not totally release and it grinds going into gear - but once in gear it is released enough that the tractor does move.
I'm resigned to the reality I'm going to have to split the tractor to make the adjustments, and maybe put in a new throwout bearing.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do when I have it apart to cure this problem? Yes, the clutch fingers were properly adjusted.

the bearing will eventually wear down after many years, I assume you have the early adjuster which is a little bit of a pain, suggest reassembly just put 2 bolts in to hold it together and check the adjustment before its completely back together
new bearing should be soaked light oil of some sort for several days, then greased before install

If the bearing is worn down that much, bearing replacement may be all that is needed. Do as tst suggests, 2 bolts then check free play adjustment. Those early ones can be a real pain!

Update -
I managed to get proper free play; it was not easy had to carefully remove bolt holding the yoke together then managed work the clevis down and turn it. Clutch releases BUT still have a problem with gears spinning, maybe bad pilot bearing, please see new post.
