Re: rebuilt engine, no compression
I just went out to the barn and thought I would try to start it, it started on the 3rd pull of the hand crank. I thought that was pretty good, I think it may be better than it was.

Re: rebuilt engine, no compression
I've been running this with the mag from my 47 because the original one had a weak spark. I replaced the coil in the original mag and it started up and it ran for about 5 minutes then started running bad and died. Does this sound like a bad coil or maybe a bad condenser?

No real good way to bench test a coil.Rob in NH wrote:How would you check the coil?
Check for fuel flow or partial fuel flow. Does engine start again in 10 minutes then run for 3 or 4 minutes?
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: rebuilt engine, no compression
The only way I have ever been able to "test" a magneto coil is as follows. Keep in min d this is not a complete test, but if it fails this test, it's no good.
Connect the primary winding to the secondary "nub" with an ohm meter. You should get a reading like 9500-10500 ohms. Do the same test with the other end of the primary wire, the little tab that goes under the clamp down bolt. You should see the same reading. And of course, you can check continuity between the two ends of the primary winding as well.

Re: rebuilt engine, no compression
I think I may have found the problem, I installed an old condenser and it started and has been running for over 30 minutes so hopefully that was the problem.
