Sitting 20 years need help

Postby Damien49cub » Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:35 pm

Hi guys I'm new here, well I've been reading this forum for a couple weeks but just now became a member. I'm in the process of a rebuild on a 49 cub that was my great great grandfather's so it's pretty special to me. I've heard nothing but great things about these tractors and would love to get it going. It's been sitting for 20 years but the engine is free has great compression and no valves are stuck. Currently trying to figure out my spark problem which isn't super difficult. My biggest problem is the clutch seems to be stuck to the flywheel and I'm pretty nervous about splitting this thing. Any help would be great it needs a little more help than the knowledge I have available

Hi,
Welcome to the website.
If you have been reading on here, you probably read that if the Cub has been sitting, the engine oil pump probably needs priming. It can lose it's prime sitting, and if it can't suck up oil, there would be no oil pressure or oil circulation. Engine damage can happen running the engine with no oil pressure.
Below is a post I made about priming the oil pump, it is part way down the page.

Below is a page from the 1949 Cub owner's manual showing the clutch, you can see what it is in the pic.

Welcome to the forum.
You will need to prime the oil pump before you start the tractor, otherwise you will be getting in over your head.

After 2 posts you will have access to the PDF Manuals on the site.

Start it in gear and drive it around like crazy. The bumpy the ride the better. That is how I did one of my Cubs. Make sure you have enough room to move around without hitting anything. Push the clutch in once in a while to see if it is still stuck. If all else fails, you can bring it to our CubFest in October and we can help you with many of your problems.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Thanks guys I'll try that. It's not too far away from starting up maybe a day or two. I have to get a new starter and battery unfortunately the hand crank is missing. I'd absolutely love to come to the cubfest. You guys are in Ohio right?

The 6 volt Delco starter can be rebuilt at an automotive electrical repair shop.
Sometimes they need new brushes and bushings in them.
If the starter won't do anything, the contacts in the switch on top of it may need sanding and cleaning.
If you remove the switch, disconnect the battery ground cable first. The switch has an insulation in it, at each side, be sure to put them in, or it can short.
Sometimes they need a new switch.
TM Tractor at the bottom of the page has quality parts, the people on here say.

Never try to hand crank one with a stuck clutch.

Yes, the CubFest is west of Cincinnati.

Out of curiosity, why never try to hand crank one with a stuck clutch? If it's in not in gear, it shouldn't make a difference. Hand cranking, clutch stuck or not, if it's in gear and it starts, your gonna get run over. What am I missing?

While you’re waiting to do other things, tie or block down the clutch pedal. It may release on it’s own.

I need to clarify this. If you are going to drive the Cub to try to shake the clutch loose you need to start it in gear. You can't start it in neutral and then try to put it in gear. Therefore, you don't want it in gear to crank start it.

What about pull starting it? I'm in indiana so not too far at all. Also any over simplified ways to retime it? I accidentally took the magneto off and didn't make any marks prior to me removing it

Maybe bring it to the CubFest in October and we could look at it.
