Saving patina

Postby Leewebb7 » Mon Jan 08, 2024 7:43 am

Good morning everyone.....I'm looking for suggestions on what to use to save what patina I have ( old paint/ surface rust)...and keep the tractor from rusting any further, at least until I decide to paint it...I love the look of old rusty tractors, weird I know , but I would like to eventually paint it...putcof curiosity input some oil from my crankcase on a rag mixed with a little transmission fluid I had and rubber the hood and the paint went back to nice looking old red paint color..... has anyone just wiped everything seen with motor oil???...what have you used???.....will it come off when I decide to paint???...when the sun comes up I'll take a picture of my hood ...the area that I did......thanks!!

Polyurethane……personal I perfer repainting but everyone has their artistic style. I would suggest those spray Polyurethane’s sold at Home Depot or Lowe’s and definitely use a respirator when using it. Lungs dont like urethanes!

I have used turtle wax rubbing compound and polishing compound to remove some oxidation and small scratches in the paint. It does a lot to freshen up the original paint. I have used fluid film after to give is shine. I was thinking of using turtle wax on my better tractors.

Repainting is up to the owner. I am not good at painting. I also own several tractors whose previous owners were also not very good painters especially when they used poor-quality paint. Sun-bleached red becomes pepto bismol pink in a few years.

I think my original paint tractors with all of their scars look better than my repainted ones.

I like Fluid Film...lanolin, I believe. Available at Lowe's in a spray can.

I prefer a mixture of 50/50 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Add or take away each to your desired liking. Don't wash after application. Washing it with an SOS soap pad prior to applying will work wonders too. Here is a video of a Farmall 140 I did and it turned out real nice. Video shows me washing it down, applying the mixture, and the final results.

If you don't care to watch the whole video, this particular part is about 23 minutes in.

Hi,
Motor oil will probably make the paint look shiny. It is also sticky, and will collect dust when using the tractor for work.
Leewebb7 wrote:will it come off when I decide to paint???

Yes, use paint thinner on a rag and rub until the paint is free of oil. Wait for the thinner to evaporate so you can see the dry paint, and be sure the oil is gone. New paint won't stick if there is oil on the hood.

It depends on how smooth you want the hood to look. I can see lines in your picture above, where there is probably another layer of paint under the top layer. Anything like that will probably show more with new shiny paint on it.
If you want it totally smooth, first you need to remove the old paint, so the whole hood is bare metal.
You can use paint remover on the whole hood, it will make the paint come off. I guess they still make it, I haven't bought it lately.
Then sand the whole hood, make it as smooth as you can. A power sander of some kind is a big help.
You have to know which grit of sandpaper to use. The metal has to be smooth so the paint will look smooth.
Then use primer on the bare metal, before the paint. If there are places on the hood where there is rust that has lightly pitted the metal, you can put several layers of primer on them, and sand after each layer, allowing time for the layers to dry before sanding.
If the rust is deeper, they make a filler material to put on the places, it dries and can be sanded smooth.
All these products are sold at automotive parts stores, like NAPA, the last I know of.
The paint they sell at Case IH dealers is good quality, they have said on here. I would use their red paint, and the primer to go with it, if they have primer.
Below is a spray can of the red, at TM Tractor Parts, you can look at the color of the cap. The cap maybe doesn't have much light on it.
