Anti-Seize or LocTite

Postby CaperKen » Fri Mar 08, 2024 7:45 am

I'm about ready to reinstall my oil pan. Is it better to use Anti-Seize or LocTite on the oil pan bolts? I'll be using lock washers.

Agree also. For anyone just reading this be aware that when you use Anti-Seize it changes the torque settings because it is lubricating the threads. All factory torque settings are based on dry threads. Generally speaking a 20% reduction is recommended but check with the product maker and also research how it changes for the specific thing you are torquing. For instance some spark plug companies recommend as much as a 50% reduction. Using anti-seize is not to be taken lightly.

Question: If you mix loc-tite and anti-seize together in a 50/50 ratio, is it the same as using nothing at all? :x

If you’re using lock washers you don’t need lock tight……I would recommend some Aviation Permatex “lightly” on both sides of the gasket.

The main key is to flatten the mounting surface of the pan prior to mounting and don't over tighten the bolts causing it to deform the flange on the pan.

I put a light "skin" of sealant on both sides of gaskets..I do it on both tractors and HD's..Anti-sieze....no.....locktite....no real reason.....Locktite if you have vibration problems or fastners backing out.....Anti-sieze for stuff you don't want to get stuck!!!!

Anti-seize is great when you have two different metals (like alumimum and steel) or it is exposed to elements such as road salt or water and you don't want it to corrode/rust together. The oil pan bolts will be sealed up and should not be exposed to anything.
