64 white hood

Postby KLove » Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:05 am

Picked up a '64 cub last week. Didn't check serial numbers for a few days, once I did I realized we picked up a good one. Poor thing sat abandoned in a GA field for years.

As far as I know, no one has found any documentation that verifies the red Cubs with white hoods. The only proof is that several clearly original Cubs in that configuration have turned up over the years. This tractor is a pretty convincing example. It looks like it has never been painted. The only explanations for the white hood is that it was built that way or the hood was replaced with a used one from a later tractor. There have been too many original-looking examples for them all to have replaced hoods. Serial numbers on the examples have focused the serial number range to about 224401-224704. Serial number arithmetic limits the number of tractors to a maximum of 304. Serial numbers 224443 and 224702 have both been reported as an original red/white with the appropriate "Farmall" decal by users on this site. A dozen years ago a member of this site had a list of about 15 tractors in this category. The Cub Database has a similar number. I haven't checked to see if they are the same serial numbers.

Here is the apparent sequence of events in the June/September 1964 time frame:
-- until 6/64 Cubs were normally red and used 6-volt electrical.
-- 6/64 at serial 224401 changed to 12-volt (required changed rear tank support), apparently hoods were changed to white.
-- 9/64 at serial 224705 changed from "Farmall" decals to "International" decals. Colors changed to yellow/white to match lawn/garden equipment.

Note that changing hood colors required painting before attaching to the tractor. I don't know if that change from the older practice of painting the whole tractor with the hood in place was changed at this time or was done earlier. Maybe they rearranged the line at the same time the 12-volt change happened and it was just convenient to start using the same (white) hoods on both the Farmalls and the Lo-Boys. The changes other than paint colors can be backed up by Harvester documents, most are in the Parts Catalog.

You will find some differences of 1 on these numbers from some you will see reported. Those differences seem to keep creeping in as someone makes a mistake and others copy it. Evidently people notice bigger errors and don't propagate them.
